  • Camera Movement

Would somebody be willing to take a quick look at how this video works:

The camera appears to be "moving around." Now I don't think it really is. This is an effect. How is this done? Is there a name for this effect. I have NewBlue Total FX from about 3 years ago. Does that have it, or another 3rd party product, or some technique I can do inside Edius 7?

Layouter with keyframes. I shoot GH5/GH5S UHD60P and edit in a 1920x1080 project and that is how I crop in , pan and zoom to track the actors on stage. In this case I think the edit is trying to emulate hand held whereas I try and move as if I am on a really good tripod. When I shoot both cameras are fixed on tripods and do not move at all for the whole performance. One is framed in a little closer than the other so that I have close to a 4:1 zoom capability. Use Bezier to get smooth camera motion or control the movement rate.

Oh wow so you go throughout the whole video and try to make it happen with keyframes, moving at the speeds that you would like? I guess if you learn some patterns you can get good at this. So you move the shot up and down, left, right, all around. Whoa, a bunch of work.

Gosh I hope there's an effect that does this.

Personally I think that is absolutely awful and hope it doesn't become a thing but if you don't want to do it with the Layouter, you can do something very similar (but better) with FXHome Ignite's Shake effect. Here is a short sample of a locked tripod shot with the Shake effect applied.

I shoot theatre mainly so no, do not run all the way through that way. I run mulitcam first to select camera one scene at a time then emulate what I would have done following the action manually with a video camera zoom and pan. So nothing like that video. Smooth pans following actors and minimal zoom to maintain focus on the actor. Cut to a wide full stage shot etc to get entrances etc. Outcome looks like several manned cameras. But I could certainly emulate that video. Personally I think it was not very good. Sort of emulating poor hand held shooting. It is not difficult to do in layouter.

That kind of recordings,I usually throw away ! now with the new layout function object tracking you can make it viewable ( is that a correct word ? ).

I assume You mean "viewable" ? or object tracking => must be tracing and the two methods.

I'm afraid I don't like it too. It looks like the editor is doing because a) he's not quite sure what framing to use, or b) he's doing it "because he can". I remember a loooooong time ago when none linear editing first came on the scene, with FASTVideo Machine, it was the thing to throw in as many effects as possible, "because we could do it". I feel that in this instance it takes away the message the talent is trying to put forward. Sorry for the rant.

Looks like the New Blue camera plugin to me, very badly implemented...nothing wrong with pans, pushes and pulls but done well not in some auto mode...makes you feel a bit sick...and it upsets the image balance, rule of thirds...blah blah blah...
