  • Smaller File and Audio Out Of Sync

I have a one hour and 40 minute video that when I output from Edius, it comes out to be about 36 GB. I must have a smaller version of this.

I am using the preset MPEG2 1920X1080 50MBS CBR 1920X1080 Linear PCM... if I use the one that is marked 25MBS VBR it does come out to be about half the size.

So I use Handbrake and try variations, some files come out smaller, but the audio sync is then off. That defeats the whole purpose if I then attempt to edit the file in Edius and align the audio again, I still need to output via Edius, and still wind up in the same problem.

Now how am I getting my smaller file currently? I upload my file to YouTube, and then use a YouTube downloader program Video Downloader Ultimate, and I download the highest resolution video file I can, and it downloads a VERY small 1GB file.

This video works PERFECTLY and almost looks identical in resolution.

How do I determine the codec, video format, etc... of this file from YouTube and create such a file on my own. It is unreal how long this process takes. Should Handbrake be able to do this and/or does anybody make files anywhere near this size directly out of Edius? I do just need it to be stored on Vimeo or YouTube and not even necessarily super perfect resolution.

    Help!?!

which version EDIUS do you have?

if EDIUS9, you can make very small HD files using H264 with only 5M bitrate and it will look good

    earlier versions can't do that

How is the learning curve with the interface from 7 to 9?

Making smaller videos like that should not produce out of sync audio?

there is no learning curve, all looks and works the same just a darker interface, and if you buy now, you also get the EDIUS 10 serial

there won't be any out of sync

there is also no out of sync with Handbrake, you must have done something wrong there

Should handbrake be able to produce this small of a file? Can you tell me what settings to put into handbrake?

Derek, file size is dictated by the bitrate. See my post (#3) in this thread to show you how to figure out / calculate the bitrate required for handbrake or any other encoder for that matter.

For handbrake, best quality will be achieved using x264 2 pass vbr.

handbrake also has a constant quality mode that tries to figure out a bitrate based on the quality slider. The recommended defaults usually look ok or can be tweaked if desired, but it’s a bit harder to estimate the file size because the bitrate can fluctuate a lot

I never use any of the handbrake presets as they are designed for phone users only

You need to roll your own and I posted my settings many times and these settings always work 100.000000%

Can you tell me what settings I might change in here to get to the H264 with only 5M bitrate as described above?

tick dual pass and turbo first pass and type 5000

you have a later version Handbrake which I dislike, so you may also have to tick "Align A/V start"

OK with those settings it still outputs the sync out of whack... I like the idea that the new Edius version will do this on one shot. Will wait a few weeks and grab Edius 10.

Anton, do you know if my other 3rd party applications will upgrade along with the upgrade of Edius? NewBlueFX, Robuskey, Vistitle? Or do you think it's a full uninstall and reinstall of everything?

you can copy the NewBlue folder and the vistile importer plugin from 7 Plugins to 9 Plugins
deactivate Robuskey in 7 and download the latest Robuskey, then activate it in 9

then when X is released, copy from 9 Plugins to X plugins

if you untick hardware encoder, you can use 9M or less for HD

When I change the render settings in project, and make a clip, the smallest I can get this to render from a 175MB clip, 2 minutes long, is into 2.5 GB. This is really the main reason I bought Edius 10, hoping to not constantly make such huge files. What settings can I do to at least make a 175MB clip from a 175MB clip? Are these render settings customizable with a custom codec? Is there any kind of newer Handbrake conversion tool available inside Edius 10?

I literally upload these huge files to YouTube, and download them, and they are like 95% perfect quality, and 90% of the size.
