  • Edius astonishes me...

    Hi again,

I have just been playing arround with the trial of Edius 4.6 for just a day or so, but I must say that it really astonishes me positivly. Not a single crash, and pretty good real time performance on my testbench, a 3.0 GHz P4 with 2GB ram, std. disks etc.

What really made me drop the jaw was when I made a simple HDV 50i project with a few min. on the timeline. I burned it to DVD without a singe adjustment, just to to see the result. I would think that I would get a lot of interlace flicker on zoomz and pans across straight lines, but NO - what a joyride!! I have been strugeling with downconverting HDV to SD with other NLE's before, but this is just awesome. I am sure that settings can be twisted to make it even better - no doubt, but this is sure the best I have seen of this yet.

Just wanted to share my joy :-D

    /Ulf

Join the club Ulf this is the greatest NLE for HDV / Hi Def
Depending on the camera, The sharper the camera the greater the problem can become with artifacts in the conversion from HDV to SD and a number of people have done a lot of research on it on this forum to the point where there is a work around if you run into problems
    Look Here http://ediusforum.grassvalley.com/fo...ead.php?t=5141
and the cost is zero and all you need is Edius and Procoder Express making sure you identify the field order being presented to Procoder Express

      Ulf,

      Welcome!

I have been editing with Edius on a P4 3g system like yours from day one, and it has worked beautifully. Lots of realtime performance even with filters, transitions, etc.

I'm not doing HD yet, except playing around with it, so my experience is with SD DV.

As I'm writing this, I'm burning to mpg a complex timeline with many filters, transitions, titles, 3D PIP and 4 tracks of audio. Using the generic mpg encoder the quality is excellent.

I hope you continue to enjoy Edius. It used to be the world's best kept secret, but the word is spreading. I've been with Canopus products for 10 years or so now.

      Tom

Thanks, Tom. Yes - you don't hear a lot about it, but hopefully more in the future.

I don't think that HD -> SD will always result in artifacts, I think it affects a select set of source formats (codecs and recording settings).

I recently started authoring Blu-Ray disks, but prior to that I recorded in DVCProHD (mostly 30p) and output to DVD for about two years, and I have never seen the artifacts that are being discussed.

Another thing that has astonished me is encoding time. Both WMV and MPEG2 is noticeable faster to encode in Edius on the same machine than I have been used to.
