O/T Updating an ASUS bios, What method did you use.

My secondary Edit machine has been running on an older skt775 p4 3.8ghz and its been running fine, But I now need to use it for larger projects so I have built a raid and upgraded ram and I have bought a Q6600 QUAD core cpu with the intention of overclocking it to 3ghz BUT first things first. The install all went well and I have introduced a better cooling option also!

But I have an error code on post uCODE error for CPU that is an error for the loading of cpu, ASUS says it needs latest Bios so AS there are lots of ways to do this, I am just wondering the methods people have used on this board.

Now this is an EDIUS 4.6 edit machine running PC3 and imaginate 2 and will have an NXe put in when funds allow - so not entirly off topic.......IYSWIM

System is

ASUS P5W64WS PRO mobo
Intel Q6600 QUAD core cpu GO SLACR
DDR2 800 OCZ platinum memory
Seagate sata 2 160 gig hdd for OS
200 GIG SATA 2 STORAGE
3 X 500 GIG in RAID 0 onboard raid controller (Seperate)
1 x pioneer dvdr115
1x floppy
1 x PYRO FIREWIRE CARD

anyone have a well tested route..............

I am inclined to use the ASUS eZ flash utility and use the floppy of USB pen drive method BUT I am unsure to be honest!

Hey mine has been running at 3.2Ghz for a couple weeks now no problems. Make sure you have a good fan. I went for 8x400 to get to 3.2Ghz. If you increase the CPU voltage you can leave it on 9 and get to 3.6 or more but it gets too hot for me. The record is just over 5Ghz for this chip. A guy used a liquid nitrogen setup to keep it cool.

I would go the floppy or USB stick way.

You should get it to 3ghz no problems.

I used a ASUS SILENT KNIGHT II fan.
Its very quiet and works well.

What fan did you get.
If you go to www.overclockers.com.au there is allot of info on overclocking the Q6600 chip.

It's pretty funny to be able to **** in HDV-Canopus HQ in realtime while you have have Photoshop open and Dreamweaver working on a website and have a broswer open and email all at the same time. Quads Rule.....

Use EZ Flash 2 by pressing Alt + F2 during startup. Have the latest bios on a USB flash drive and you are good to go. Be sure that you unpacked the bios file before putting it on the flash drive. :)

I do not endorse or support overclocking. You are on your own there. There are over clockers that hang out on the Asus forum. That is where I would hang out for that info.

The Q6600 is fine as it is George although the ASUS board gives a % turbo mode and I have opted for that with everything on auto its running at 2.8 ghz at 37c so its fine and very quick on encoding! which is what I wanted.

BUT not as fast as my stock quad 3.0ghz as per your build!

I have 2 very nice stable HDV edit suites and I can now get to do some real work!!;-)

My thoughts on overclocking are that you may shorten the life of the chip but who has the same chip for 5 years anyhow. Most folks upgrade every year or two.

I would be interested to see what your stock 3 GIG compares to my overclocked 2.4 Ghz chip Cathryn

Here is a little program called wPrime. If you run it, it will load up your Chip and give a result of its speed. I'm getting 21.64 seconds for the 32m (Speed test)
