  • quick response anyone 4x 500 gig or 2 x 1tb

Hi all I have a opportunity to get 2 1tb seagate ES drives at very low price I was just wondering would they give the same data throughput of my 4 x 500 gig seagate ES drives
When in a Raid 0 config

I could then have an internal raid 2tb and some good storage!

    Cathryn,

Are your 4 x 500 all striped as one 2TB volume?

Do you want redundancy or are you comfortable with sheer performance only?

I like to run 4 1TB drives that are the same and then in the 2310's bios set up a striped pair that is also mirrored. So this would be a raid 0 + 1. Great speed and full redundancy. In case of a drive failure, you can still run at the full speed.

The 500's or the 1TB's will yield you the same speed as long as they are the same spec SATA-II/300 and the same enterprise series drives from Seagate. These will have an NS at the end of the model number. Enterprise series drives also have faster seek performance.

      George thanks for reply

These 2 drives are in replacement for the 4

      So I would have 2 x 1tb drives in raid 0

      instead of

      4 X 500 GIG drives in raid 0

Would I notice any difference in performance between 2 1tb drives or 4 500gig

      in raid 0

This will be the goal!!! when funds allow

You should still be over 200MB/sec with two drives. Do you know what your speed was with the 4 500's?

        Try it with HD Tach.

George the 4 x 500 gig sata 2 es seagates returned 205 / 235 mbs read write cant remember which is which think read was the higher figure.

If the two 1 TB will give more or less these figures then I will get them!!

Basically, the more drives in a Raid 0 the faster it will go (irrespective of size). The individual drives performance would have some effect but in essence you will notice little difference in your work flow between the two set-ups. Less to maintain and manage with the 2 x 1Tb configuration.
