New Edius user - importing from DVD

Just bought an Edius 4 system. Suddenly a client wanted me to change a DVD I'd made him and he couldn't find the master tapes. So I imported the DVD into Edius just fine, and ping - there it was on the timeline.

But an oddity is that at every chapter point on the original DVD there's a tiny gap in the timeline audio of 6 frames. Anyone else noticed this? Something I'm doing wrong or a tick-box left unchecked maybe?

did this happen with DiscCapture tool? or did you demux and join?

99% of the time, I just capture via S-Video from DVD player to avoid any possible surprises

but if I made the DVD in the first place, a demux should give me a video and an audio file, I place the video on timeline and audio on audio track and it is usually ok

The only reliable way I have found to convert all sorts of non protected DVD's for use in Edius is...

1. DVDFabDecrypter to copy the vob files (I dont need the decrupt bit, but its reliable)

2. Import into Womble Video Edit and export with 2 channel Mpeg 1 layer 2 audio 48k, stereo (leave the video as is as the file will convert a LOT quicker if it only has to recode audio not video as well)

3. Import to Edius.

Its Foolproof. Try with a Womble Demo (www.womble.com), DVDFabDecrypter has a free version.

I just use Womble but if its just a simple edit I do it in Womble. Latest version supports AC3. Then import back into DVD Lab for authoring. For a re-author copy all DVD files to a directory, import VOB 1 into DVD Lab and it will join all VOB's together and re- author or use these files in Womble. I almost never use Edius , Vegas or PP for this as they all want to re-encode whereas Womble will only re-encode what's needed, including the audio. Faster and better quality.

This will show my lack of knowledge, but I will ask the question anyway. what is the problem in taking the output from DVDfab Platinum and adding it to the timeline in Edius directly. I tried this product and the output goes on the timeline without any problem, and can be edited. You can also create a dvd from edius with two channel ac3 output. By adding the wombie conversion are you able to preserve the 5.1 ac3?

I think Womble is only stereo but my main reason is for my own discs to re edit or re-author and I like it because it does not re-encode. Using any of the main NLE's will result in a re-encode of the data.

Hmmm, maybe I was doing something wrong but I like collecting video clips and when I tried to take clips from a dvd using womble, right away I noticed the quality difference between the original and the saved clip. When I use edius, the only difference I notice is sometimes the colour red is not as sharp around the edges, but that's a rare thing as there has to be a big block of red for me to notice it. Otherwise I can't tell the difference between my saved clip and the dvd. I just rename the vob files to mpg, then use procoder 2 to change the mpg files to avi, then edit the avi files in edius.

How were you viewing the clips. Womble doesn't change anything. IF you use the default export from Womble and don't change anything it will be a file copy.

Ok, thanks for the tip. I don't remember exactly what I did, about a month ago I was reading about the womble mpeg video wizard and I remembered I had it but stopped using it for some reason, so thought I'd try it again, because the avi files are about 5 times as big as the original mpg files. So I reinstalled mpeg video wizard, loaded up a video and tried a simple edit but I think it was doing some transcoding and also the resulting clip didn't look as good plus I'm not sure but I don't think I could get it to preserve the original aspect ratio on the widescreen clips...well my memory is a bit fuzzy as to exactly what happened but the quality definitely wasn't there...maybe i did something wrong. I'll reinstall it later to try again since you're getting good results because it would be better to have smaller files...except in the cases where I'd like to do a bit more than simple frame accurate cuts, in which case I'd have to do those with edius.

I only use womble because it gives me a guaranteed useable result, and can convert and re-mux just the audio without causing the video to be recoded..

Without it, when I put vob files directly into Edius I often get crashes, green overlays and all sort of problems. These are caused by an out of 'Edius' spec audio channel, and so are negated by convertion of just the audio using womble. I regurlarly convert many different DVD files that I am sent to our Digital TV Broadcast format (6mbit SD mpeg2) and this is the only way I can guarantee the workflow.

Antonsvideo - I just used the Edius Disc capture and got those tiny gaps on my timeline. Your method of simply grabbing the analogue (S video) and feeding that into Edius for subsequent editing sounds neat and quick - but are there quality compromises that are noticeable?

I don't see any quality loss, the SP card or NX card have a clean S-VIdeo in and if you choose the HQ or Lossless Codec for capture, it will look brilliant
