  • Help needed with Storm and Firewire Card in same system

Hi All - On the long road to workflow perfection I have come across a glitch My Storm 2 system died and I have built a new one:

    ASUS P5W64WS mainboard
2 gig DDR2 800 mghz OCZ platinum memory
ATI HD 3850 512 MEG GRAPHICS CARD
    INTEL DUEL CORE 3 GHZ

Now I have fitted the Strom 2 board and Edius 4.5 and the upgrade to 4.6 and all is going very well

But I want to have this sytem as a duel use! I would like to capture HDV via a OHCI IEEE 1394 card The PYRO pci card has been bought and goes well BUT will not play nice with the storm boar in the system.

    The board config is:

    PCIe x 16 Video card
    PCIe x 16 FREE
    PCIe x 4 FREE
    PCIe x 4 FREE

    PCI slot - Storm 2

    PCI Slot - Firewire card

    No I can:

Capture sd with storm , play back and edit all ok

I cant capture HDV through edius the picture frops out and sound is effected

If I remove Strom fire wire board is fine

I would like the two cards in the same machine

    Storm IRQ IS 21

    FIREWIRE CARD IRQ IS 22

Any help to achieve this would be great!

    Just a quick update:

I can capture with storm SD 4:3 and 16:9

I can capture HDV in HQ using the MPEG capture utility BUT I want file splitting and mpeg capture utility does not seem to do this.

I would like to capture using EDIUS and the Pyro card BUT here lies the problem.

WHY can I capture using the mpeg utility BUT not EDIUS?

    QUESTION:

Would buying a PCIe OHCI card like the PYRO PCIe version help? so putting the card in a PCIe slot rather than a pci slot next to the Storm card?

Have tryed also disabling any on board stuff to see if that helps - BUT it makes little difference

The problem exsists with the Motherboards on board 1394 also

BUT If I remove the storm card the capture process through EDIUS is fine?? with onboard 1394

I am a little perplexed - and all was going so well.........

If you're in a DVStorm project, capture will want to occur from the DVStorm's DV port.

If you're in an OHCI project, capture should occur from OHCI-compliant 1394 port.

YES!! GrassValley_BH I know and it does BUT on the HDV through the PYRO 1394 card it is pixilated and unuseable footage

If I remove or disable storm in device manager Then HDV Capture through the the PYRO card is SPOT ON. ALSO with mainboards 1394 port.

There is a conflict of some sort with STORM DRIVERS and ANY OTHER 1394 port

BUT The mpeg capture utility works! Is this because its a stand alone capture application??

I think its something to do with EDIUS and the way it loads the drivers for storm?

Bottom line capture through EDIUS FOR HDV WITH A FIREWIRE card is not possible for me while I have a Storm card in the machine........This machine!

On an older machine - Intel 915 gev mobo EDIUS, STORM and PYRO card played well together? This was with EDIUS 4.54

Can you think of anything else It could be? OR any oother ways to isolate the possible problem?

Do you think a PCIe PYRO CARD would do it?

        Thanks -

Of couse an additional NXe would do the trick!!:-)

I've got the Storm2 and Pyro PCI-E running in the same machine. capturing seems fine. the only issue is I can't monitor HDV out.
I think either Storm doesn't support it or the Sony DVCam deck it's going into doesn't ...or both ( I've tried from the OHCI to the Dvcam and no joy)

I believe my ability to capture HDV using HQ is also being affected by having the Storm card and OHCI in the same machine. Granted, I have not yet tried disabling the Storm card, but if my ADS Pyro capture device is turned on, the Storm card will not operate (capture) even if EDIUS is in Storm mode. So I'm wondering if conversely the Storm card interferes with an OHCI device in some way.

From what I've been reading, my system should be fast enough to capture HDV using HQ with OHCI, but it chokes immediately with the dreaded "Destination Disc Too Slow" - you would thing a 90mbs throughput RAID would be fast enough, so as Brandon said in another thread, that's a generic message meaning there's trouble in River City..

              Cathryn,

Take out the Pyro card and try the onboard OHCI port that is available on that mainboard.

              Then let me know.

DVStorm and OHCI have no relationship driver-wise...
Sounds like there's some kind of bus bandwidth issue - maybe DVStorm and the Pyro are sharing resources?

Do what George suggested - pull the Pyro and see how things work with the on-board OHCI.

                  Still an issue

                  Grass Valley BH + George

I have tryed each and every way.................It seems

The Storm cards operation is spot on in every aspect WITH or WITHOUT the Pyro Card in the machine.

Its the other way around................With the Storm card in and enabled HDV capture via the OHCI HDV setting is effected, both onboard and PYRO firewire ports

Remove or just disable storm in device manager and Capture of HDV to HQ via PYRO or ONBOARD is Fine

NOW this in all instances is using EDIUS as the capture programme for STORM and PYRO

I can Capture HDV TO HQ with the PYRO card with STORM in and enabled

                  IF

I use the MPEG capture utility that comes with EDIUS in the bonus folder.

The Pyro card is IRQ 20

The Storm card is IRQ 21

If I switch them in the PCI slots the IRQ will change respectfully.......So I assume they are not sharing IRQ resources..........

COME ON GRASS VALLEY GIVE ME A FANTASIC trade in deal for my storm card..........;-)

Do you think a PCIe PYRO card would make any difference, Im not sure at this point?

You might already have done this, but try uninstalling the Canopus DV Driver program, reboot, then install the one included in the v4.6 build.

Do you mean the legacy dvstorm 2 drivers? If so This was a fresh install of windows and brand new machine
Storm is running on ONLY the drivers within 4.5 - then upgraded to 4.6 with upgrade dowload.

BUT Funny you should say this as I did have this running sweet in my old system!

I had an intel board G915 GEV running The Old legacy storm 2 drivers then installed the EDIUS 4.5 software then the upgrade to 4.54

But the system was not efective at editing HDV HQ hence the upgrades that have taken place.

My aim was only to utilise this machine:

                      ASUS P5W64WS
P4 3.8 (to be upgraded to core 2 duo 3ghz)
                      2 gig ddr2 800mghz OCZ platinum memory
                      STORM 2 (all SD work)
PYRO CARD (HDV capture for rough edit...to transfere project to main machine later)

For SD editing and Capture of HDV to a pullout drive to be transfered into my main machine. Just trying to maximise my time in the office........good worker I am!!

                        Hi Cath,

No, not the DVStorm driver (in Device Manager), but the Canopus DV Driver, which is an application... Try uninstalling Canopus DV Driver from Add/Remove Programs, reboot, then install the one in the EDIUS v4.6 download (in the Drivers folder).

                          Cathryn, (or others)

Where exactly is the MPEG capture utility you speak of? I checked all of my update downloaded folders through 4.54 and cannot find any "bonus" directory.

If it is on an original disc somewhere, those are at my other location right now and I'll have to go get them.

I would like to experiment with that and see if I can capture HQ with the utility.

I do know that whenever my ADS Pyro external A/D converter is turned on, EDIUS absolutely will not allow me to capture using the Storm card for SD, (with EDIUS in SD Storm mode), so I know there is some kind of conflict.

                          Tom

EDIT: Found it on the website under the extras for EDIUS and installed it. I'm going to experiment.

                          Thanks for the tip.

                            Well here's the deal -

I can capture just fine using the MPEG Capture Utility to HQ! No Disc Too Slow Errors using the MPEG Capture Utility.

That leads me to believe the problem is indeed in EDIUS, not a hardware conflict on my machine, or too slow a processor/buss - unless EDIUS introduces a lot of overhead.

                            I'm on EDIUS 4.54 BTW.

Well now at least I can capture to HQ without having to capture to m2t and then convert from within the bin!

Now to work on the 24P dilemma.

                              Plasma

Glad you like it....Its a great little app and saves you using EDIUS but it does not seem to support file splitting.....you know when you can split the capture when you have a start stop on the tape!

If it did I would be a happy bunny! But No!

However I am glad to see I am not alone! There is NO sharing conflict in my pc either, it is just EDIUS does not like capturing via firewire while there is a storm card in the pc it would seem.

Grass Valley BH - How would that have got onto my system if the only thing I installed was EDIUS

I had a clean install of XPpro SP2 Then put Storm 2 in and then loaded EDIUS thats it.

So the only drivers related to Storm on the machine are the ones from the EDIUS Install

OR am I looking at this wrong? need it explained like I'm a 6yr old please

                              Thanks
