NX for HDV question

I would do just as you suggested. Buy a whole new Edius Hardware/Software bundle like the NX Express.

This can be had for under $1,400. It will get you both of the latest PCIe cards as well as Edius 4.6 and includes the FireCoder MPEG daughterboard module on the NX board.

I know that is a bit more than the cost of buying the PCI expansion board (if you can find one) and upgrading Edius to 4.6. But you will make that up in system components.

You can build a Core2 Duo / PCIe system for a bit less money than a Multi Core Xeon / PCI-X server board based system. Nothing wrong with PCI-X and serverboards except the cost. If you wanted 8 cores then that is the only way to go. But a properly configured Core 2 Duo or Quad is the best bang for the buck.

I was actually thinking about a Core 2 Quad 6600 system as I'd heard it's a good bang for the buck, as you say. Although, it's still early in my investigations so it's obviously not set in stone. Putting together a whole new system could work out as I could keep my present system together and still get use out of it as well. Do you build systems or help put them together...? If so, I would be up for some good advice :-) Thanks.

I currently have the NHX-E1 card with Edius 3.5 (possible 3.62 - is that a version?). I wasn't sure whether it would be better to upgrade the whole Edius software/hardware combo or just add the expansion board. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm not certain the NHX-E1 + PCIe expansion board combination has been tested, as the PCIe expansion board came out with the NHX-E2...

For safety's sake, I'd go with the PCI expansion board, as long as you have the appropriate slots.

Lee, are you say that you are going to purchase the 32bit HD expansion board?

Also, what version of Edius do you currently own?

I ask these questions because you may be spending a good chunk of change on older technology that will also require you to spend a bit more money on a compatible system. There may be a better cost:performance option that make better sense.

There are two NX baseboard versions and two expansion board versions.

NX baseboard:

• NHX-E1 - 64-bit PCI (aka PCI/PCI-X version) - if put into a 32-bit PCI slot, the board will operate in SD only.
• NHX-E2 - x1 PCIe (aka PCI Express version)

HD Expansion board:

• 32-bit PCI
• x1 PCIe

The current "NX Express" package is the x1 PCIe baseboard and the x1 PCIe HD Expansion board.

You don't need the bay. It's purely a convenience thing.

Yes, I have the NHX-E1. Just to clarify... I need a 64 bit PCI slot the for the NHX-E1 to edit HDV. Do I need to get the 32 bit PCI expansion kit or will the x1 PCIe work also?

I have a NX for HDV card pci-x. I want to double check whether this needs a 64bit pci slot to edit HV or just a 32 bit slot? The info on the GV site addresses mostly the newer NXExpress, so I'd like a definitive answer.

The 2nd ?... I will be adding the expansion kit as well. This only needs a 32 bit slot, correct?

Lastly (for now)... do I need to install the bay if I install the expansion board or can I just install the board?

I'm not sure on the supply of NHX-E1 boards... you'd have to check with the local offices. Last I knew any that remained were out in the channel, but I can't speak for outside of the US.

are you saying the NHX-E1 - 64-bit PCI (aka PCI/PCI-X version) is available again? that would be great, the PCIe flaps in the wind, no proper mounting support

You need a PCI-X slot on your motherboard as well as a 32bit pci slot.
Two completely different things.
I guess you can leave the bay out. It is for convience on the front panel.
In order to get HD, you have to install the expansion board.
