Suggestions needed for new upgrade software and system

Hi,

I need to get ready for real time HD very soon. I was waiting for the new Sony EX-1 camera before I jumped in, but it looks like I may need to start with a Sony Z1 or something like that camera. So, thinking about the camera, it looks like I will need to upgrade my Edius 3.5 to 4.5 Broadcast, to edit XD-Cam. Right?

Computer …. BH said a Quad Cord CPU will not speed up Edius, so I guess a Core2duo would be the best for now. What about Procoder? Would a quadcore speed up Procoder?
Any suggestion on which motherboard model & CPU to get.

Video Board … I have two Samsung 24” monitors running with my WF-17 Video Card, but I know I need to upgrade the Video Board. Suggestions?

I already have about 6 1TB Sata2 drives and a Raid card (PCI Version). I’m guessing the raid card needed to be PCI-e, to be fast enough. (I usually edit with three to four sources) Right?

I have a 26” Samsung HD TV/Monitor. So to view my edits in HD, I guess I need a NX, or something like that. Any Suggestions?

I still need to record and edit some SD video from VHS, from time to time. I’m thinking I can keep my old RexRT system running to capture the old stuff, but if I need to get a new card to view HD and it already has S-video, RCA, DV inputs, than the old system will be taken away to make room for the new.

I’m open to all suggestions.

Shoot in HD downcovert in the camera and then edit in SD and you don't have to change anything. That way you can advertise HD. Very few are delivering HD now anyway.

Not exactly... What I said was that it depends on the type of work you're doing. If you're not providing enough work for all the cores, then more cores is just like having more than two people to play tennis on a single court.

In the past I have been encoding my HD and SD files at seperate times. Mostly of the fear of how long it would take.
To my surprise, I load up PC3 with the file to encode and spit out SD and HD in about the same time it would take to do just the HD.
I have to try this with my Quad Core system.

You might need a larger socket (court) to make that work. Or, the performance may be more like hyper-threading instead...;)

You recommended the Extreme version of the CPU, how much faster is the Extreme over the fastest non-extreme? I usually have 2 to 3 PIP running (2 to 3 sources) while editing.

I looked at the Quadro FX1500 and 1700 video cards. The 1700 says that it have HD TV out. Would this work much like the NX-express?

Does the NX-Express work much like the old RexRT and Storm did?

I also looked at the RocketRaid board, It said it was 4 ch. That means that its 4 drives, right?

Finally, So far, the NX-Express, Raid & video uses PCIe, (I think) Doesn't the MB only have 2 PCIe slots?

Please read into those threads I provided links to at the top of this thread.

The Mainboard that I specified (Asus P5K64 WS) has 4 PCIe x16 and 2 32bit PCI. Important; It is GV certified for PCIe NX.

The Quadro FX1700 has a small breakout box that has component, S-video & composite output. No it does not do or provide the function of the NX's output! It will output your desktop to a TV. In dual view mode, that output could be set to a lower res than your computer display and if media player was playing a clip full screen it would play full screen on the TV. The 1700 also has 512MB vs 256MB.

Yes the Rocket Raid 2310 is a PCIe x4 card and has four SATA-300 connectors on it for four channel raid. There is a model above I believe 2320 that is the same except 8 channels with 8 connectors. There 3000 series controllers step up the speed with PCIe x8 and 8 channels, for when you need over 700MB/sec. Yes, Mega-Bytes!

As for CPU, the QX9650 is a bit pricey, the cutting edge usually is. For about half the money you could go with the new Core 2 Quad 9550. 2.8GHz, 1333 FSB, 45nm, 12MB L2. It really is the price vs performance leader right now.
