I have four "SAS" connections on my new MOBO. Has anyone used one of these connections for anything?

I have a seperate 8 drive SAS RAID controller installed, but use it with SATA drives succesfully. I presume your onboard controller can also be used with SATA drives and the correct cabling. I know this applies to TYAN boards with onboard SAS controllers. Check your motherboard manual.

I believe Seagate are bringing out 'cheaper' SAS drives based on standard SATA drives which might be an option to full 15k SAS drives.
