  • Format editing advice!

I will be using a Canon XH G1 shortly and I have a question about capturing the video. Can't I shoot in HDV, capture the Mpeg-2 files and then convert to Canopus HQ using Pro Coder for out put to SD? I am not familiar with the demands placed on Edius as an editor and am looking for the best formats to shoot, capture, edit and output to SD or DVD's. I am only set up for NTSC, SD now and will not be going any farther in the video world.

Yes, or you can convert to Canopus HQ from the EDIUS Bin.

So the bit rate demand for capturing HDV will be about the same as an avi. Then I suppose I can duplicate the HDV file and save it on an external drive for possible future use. The as you suggest, convert the originally captured HDV file to Canopus HQ from the bin or from Pro Coder. What will be the effect on video quality going this route? Would I be better off shooting in SD and forget about saving the HDV files for future use?

God help me in Montana, Phil

If you have the room save the Native HDV files, they are easily converted to Canopus HQ and take up a quarter of the disk space.
When and if you upgrade to a Quad core processor you will find you can edit the native HDV files just as easy as Canopus HQ, takes about 10% more processing power on a Quad 10-14% against 20-24% and if you are making DVD's as most of us do the quality will be much better than comming from SD

Thank you Barry. I have the room. Another question, can I duplicate the Native HDV file? Method? Will it be the same as making a dupe of an avi file?

Go into windows explorer or double click my computer
Go to the folder with the files
Select the first file then Ctl+A (Select All)
            Right Click and select copy
Go to the folder for saving
            Right click and select Paste
            And you are done
