New Computer - big problems - some help, please!

Well, the research is over, the computer is assembled with the components listed below, and I've got a few "hiccups"! BluRay playback - stupendous. DVD playback - great. So from this I presume the 8800 GT video card is operating well. BUT - EDIUS problems - many. I'll list a couple of them, and any astute comments on any of them is much appreciated.

EDIUS 4.52 LOADED:

1. Cannot see pix while capturing through DVStorm2 card set to DV input - although capture is 100% successful. Have not tested OHCI capture yet.

2. When editing and playing back timeline in either OHCI Harware setting or DVStorm setting - picture STUTTERS badly. Even a smooth camera pan results in stuttered pan - at different moments on different playbacks - so I know it's NOT in the avi file. Buffer is a 720, and full all the time except when complicated transition drags it down temporarily.

3. Also - picture sometimes appears (in a pan) like I can see the individual fields of the interlace. Verticals edges when moving horizontally are sometimes jagged.

4. When an m2t file is loaded into the editor, playback on ANY movement at all creates total picture "waves" or a "shimmy" throughout the movement. Even a movement within frame creates this "shimmy" around whatever is moving. I thought EDIUS 4.x was supposed to be able to edit m3t files rather than having to capture or convert to HQ?

5. GV Support/compatibilty on Asus P5K Delux - says "Use Direct3D9" setting in Video Display Overlay Type. Box is greyed out with "DirectDraw Overlay", and cannot change it. Could this be the stuttering and wavy problem?

Haven't tried any complicated editing yet - trying to iron out these "bugs" first. Have not upgraded to latest EDIUS version, either. Let's hope we can cure these quickly - I can't sleep!

I cannot comment on Part 1 but
Part 2 is caused by the 8800GT graphics card with HD, I have posted considerable comment on this card at times on the forum but others who are editing in SD consider it to be just great and it is in SD but has REAL problems in HD
Part 3 In Hardware overlay settings you need to set the playback to 3D9 overlay and "Field" not frame but this will bring other problems with the 8800 like audio stuttering or intermittently playing too fast.
Part 4 once again the 8800GT card, and from experience convert to HQ it take too much processor power to edit in Native m2t.
Part 5 if you cannot achieve Overlay in 3D9 then you are lost as the 8800 will not support Direct Draw in either m2t or Canopus HQ
Look at my signature I changed to an ATI 2600 Pro but will be changing soon to an ATI FireGL

Note - if you have a DVStorm, you won't get the option to change the overlay setting (this is only available with OHCI, NX and SP based systems)

The reason for this is that the DVStorm exclusively takes over the handling of video overlay.

As the above is the case you are lost for using HD as the 8800 will not support direct draw in HD

You can use Direct3D for OHCI and NX/SP HD projects :)
DVStorm does not support any HD projects.

I ditched DirectDraw on the NX machine since D3D overlay is much smoother and looks really good.

Alan, give up the one arm and a one leg and get yourself the quadro card like we had talked about. Then give up the other leg and get yourself an NX. Know you will have one arm left to operate the mouse so that you can enjoy editing! :)

Also, who cares about Blu-Ray playback on a computer monitor? It does not look nearly as good as a standalone player and a good HD-TV. Create on the computer and enjoy on the home theater.

George, I do remember our conversation well. and I should have jumped on your bandwagon from the start. My mistake.

Please refresh my tormented memory, however, and give me an idea of two cards you would recommend the most - one of your best choice, and the other the least expensive that will work well. I just spend a bundle on the new machine - and it's NOT what I make a living doing, so I can keep it down to "reasonable" with no recoupmenet possible.

If your old computer has a nvidea card place it in your new one to see what the difference is, the drivers are the same.
This is how I came to the conclusion the 8800 was to blame, I put my old 6600 back in and all worked beautifully but still had the problem of loosing overlay and was the reason for going "up" to the 8800, I have a cheap one available too.
I was rather reluctant to buy an earlier nvidea after that and as it turned out the local shops only had 8000 series cards or the ATI 2600 which was real cheap and has got me out of immediate trouble.
I have been reading a lot on the forum about the Quadra cards BUT being nvidea worries me a bit as the latest drivers for nvidea have problems with any program that uses Quicktime as a basis (Digital Juice and Smartsound) and am researching the ATI FireGL cards which have a rather impressive specification like the Quadra, but so did the 8800. Anyone had any experience with the FireGL they appear slightly cheaper than the equivalent Quadra, maybe that is an omen.

George - would you go for the 1500 rather than the newer 1700? I can get a PNY nVidia Quadro FX1700 512Mb GDDR2 PCI Express for $438 locally. But don't know if it's any better for us EDIUS folks than the 1500. Now, a COUPLE of bucks won't make much difference, and I don't want to be sorry again later.

Alan I just built a system with the 1700. The difference is that the 1700 uses DDR2 SDRAM vs the 1500's GDDR3 RAM. Under 32 bit Windows I would prefer a 256MB card rather than a 512MB card due to the way memory gets appropriated. The 1700 also comes with a mini breakout box that provides composite, s-video & component video outputs as the second display. Like I mentioned earlier, I am not a fan of watching a computer monitor or the output from the graphics card for my entertainment. I like the 1500 over the 1700. IMHO of course.
