Hi Mike

I have noticed in your sig your system spec.........you have a similar P5K mobo to mine and you have an NX express installed.

I was wondering how you have set your system up with regard to the raid.

Have you used an additional card?

Would be helpfull for detailed description of the way you have organised the fitting of everything on the mobo also what video card used and performance you get from the raid and the chip.

Yes, Imagine Video, how are you?
Well, my computer is in permanent upgrade process... I am trying to get the best possible for video editing and multimedia work.
I do not have additional card for RAID in my computer, I stil have Rocket133 card (old one), but I do not use it.
I have 3 hard drives- SATA-2, one for software and OS, two- for RAID-0, built on motherboard chip. I am not sure that this is right configuration, because I have "destination disk too slow" errors from time to time. From version 4.5, GV changed overlay system and I believe it has something to do with RAID and overlay (conflict or so). I think that disk for software must be connected not AS RAID (not a part of RAID-O, but not be connected in RAID slot), but IDE on different controller.
An additional RAID card would not help.
I got a BFG nVidia 8800 GT video card and it is absolutely great, exept there is no realtime on Xplode/PRO (as on ATI cards), but it runs fantastic with Vitascene and Boris. Also an overlay from nVidia is much better then from ATI ones.
Antec low noise case and Antec Truepower Trio 650w power supply help me work more comfortable.

In final stages of ordering components, and saw you have the Geforce 8800GT, which I understood has some overlay and "video sticking" problems. Evidentally not if your using it! It's my board of choice, looking at all boards available (especially HDCP compatible). Sooo...are you running it in DirectDraw Overlay setting or Direct3D9 Overlay setting - and is the board performing up to your standards? Picture quality and speed-wise?

I love 8800GT and it has perfect overlay, the problem I described (some users on this forum has the same one- with "disk to slow" error) has nothing to do with video card! Edius has nice new overlay in versions from 4.50, but I believe, there is a bug that create a conflict between overlay and RAID chip driver that give you this message during capture process. This is my guess, I am not sure...
Nothing to do with video card type or model...

Thanks for the info Mike I sort of guest you must be using onboard raid.

You have a pci-e slot free on your mobo? if so then you could considder a pci-e raid card. this may free you up from the disk to slow error if its what you think is still the root of the problem in your case!!

I have changed my mobo now for a later p5k model that will give me the same setup / similar to you.

Do you have any other issues with the setup other than the on board raid/h/w overlay possible conflict.

May I caution you - when you change your motherboard, you have to install (re-install) Windows from scratch. All the memory addresses, IRQs, etc - won't work if you just port the Windows from the old mobo to the new.

No, everything else is perfect. Well, I'd like bigger disks for RAID...

Hmmm... I do it once in 3-4 months without changing hardware- with windows 95-98 I did it once a month.
The best way is to use Ghost and roll back everything, but I cannot afford a computer for editing only, I use Internet on it, so...

You are asking for trouble :-). Accessing Internet on your video editing machine. The craps and junks you get in there ... is terrible. I run Webroot's Spy Sweeper with Anti Virus + Windows Washer every now once and then to get rid of the yuckies ....

Get 1TB Sata2 HDD for your RAID ... big enough? You can't stripe more than 2 disks this way if you are running Windows XP 32 - max is 2TB HDD.

Just a word of warning regarding the 8800, I just got rid of mine, Too many problems
1: Audio playback stuttering when using field display instead of Frame
2: Dropped frames when using field display
3: have to disable video acceleration in Quicktime to eliminate interface problems in Smartsound and juicer (Sliders and buttons blacked out)
4: any program that could play HD canopus HQ and used direct draw would not (Horizontal jitter around 1/8 screen jitter) namely Smartsound when composing music for track
Changed to a cheep ATI 2600 Pro and all really working well, render times no different even from Boris which uses the cards Open GL

mmm, strange eh? 8800 running beautifully here, it sorted out my problems with the olde 6600 - I know this is a silly question, but you did load the latest
nvidia drivers and not the ones supplied with the card cos they almost always never work - I tried the ones included with my 8800 just for fun - dread man, overlay screwed up, skipping and jumping - yuck!

Yes the driver was the latest 169.21
The driver is the problem with Quick time, with a 6600 in place all the quick time problems are still there but the Direct draw problem is gone.
Replace the drivers with 94.24 with the 6600 and all is OK except for loosing overlay when switching sequences, around the third switch.
The Direct draw problem seems to be with the board and it is only with Canopus HQ in HD, SD works OK
Placed the 8800 in my old editing machine Athlon XP4600 and K8NXP-9 MB and all the problems are there except for the frame dropping while play back set to field.
It is probably a conflict with another driver as it works much better with the slower computer.

Well, what can I say? Everyone has different computer configuration as well as preferences for work. I used X600, X700, X800, X850, X1950,HD2400, HD2600, HD2900 ATI based cards. I used 6600, 7600, 7900, FX4800, 8800 nVidia cards.
Hope it is enough to make a suggestions for you, guys. If you take a person and remove his legs, arms, and testicles... (sorry for it...), you will have something similar to ATI X2400- 2600 of nVidia 8500- 8600. Those cards are low budget garbage with 128bit memory can work for an old lady who send emails to her children once a week, but not suppose to be in editing computer.
Another story with those nVidia Quasra's. Great cards for those who do not care about their money or working mostly in 3D rendering. There is no real use for those cards in editing! They are using same processors as middle- class cards, but they have different architecture (you may find some overclockers articles how to convert regular card to Quadra- usually you just carefully open them, move 3-4 resistors anf flash a new "quadra" BIOS and it's done... Again there are great cards, such as FX5600, but I prefare to get myself third car instead. There is no need for it in Edius, Boris etc. It will preform 5-10% faster in vitascene, but I am not sure you have to pay for it thousands of dollars. For Lightwave 3D, Maya or 3D Max you will find them great.
Get yourself X1950 with 512mb if you using Xplode Pro/for Edius a lot- you'll have realtime (X700-850 are great too!)
In all other cases- nvidia is the best. much better for overlay picture, less power from computer, less noise and heat. I got approx 50% speed increase in Vitascene and Boris/Aftereffects (PREVIEW ONLY!!!- no video card can change rendering speed- this is you CPU only!)by switching from X1950 to 8800. And if you are a power user and know how to uninstall drivers, clean registry, tune up computer etc- you will be happy with one of recommended cards. And, please, do yourself a favor- get good brand name card, good power supply and get maximum performance without emptying your pockets...:)
