Slow Motion "drag"

First off, I currently shoot with a Sony HVR-Z1P.

The question I have revolves around seeing "drag" or a focal stuttering if you will when I slow footage down while doing a pan. Around 60% is where I normally slow footage down to for the projects I do.

I tried increasing the shutter to about 100, figuring that might help...no go. A friend told me shooting in 50p would work, but my camera doesn't shoot in progressive. I have seen a record mode at 576i / 576p in the settings. Will that help any? It also can shoot HDV as well at 1080i, don't know if that will improve the drag either.

Anyone with tips out there, please let me know.

I had the same problem with explosions I wanted to slowmow ,it felt like the footage you were looking at was going 2 steps forward and 1 step back effect ,as if the footage osilates ,that is the best way I can describe it I have tried every setting and test with no joy .
It works fine in Edius 3.65 . I would like a solution to the problem to.

As far as I know, it's pretty much a fact of video editing - slo mo pans look bad. I have never had it "work" for me, since premiere 6.5 days its always looked jumpy (especially on a CRT).

Add the Anti-Flicker problem, it remedy's the issue...but not completely.

Anti flicker was tried and made no difference.

Does anyone know if shooting in HDV or DVCAM mode will make an difference in the quality of pans put in slow motion?

Or any other solutions for it in general?

i did some experiment with 'video properties'(right click of the mouse) change to bottom field..topfield or progressive...and wala.. i could do slo-mo on a close up of a dove flying by ...in 5-10%speed !!... without 'drag' or jittering.
sometimes it works sometimes don't ;) depends on the camera setting perhaps

Just tried that...the default was bottom field...top field and progressive made it even worse. :(

You might try a program like DeShaker to steady your slowed footage. I haven't tried it for this specific purpose, but it does an absolutely amazing job of steadying shakey shots. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it fixed things for you.

Well it's not that my shots are shaky. The pan looks fine in reg motion, it's just when it's slowed does it show the drag effect.

That is just the way it is, best thing to do is pan very fast or very slow, you are right in the middle that is why it looks that way.

i learnt from past project...NEVER do fast pan unless u really need it.
i also hate that drag effect since the beginning of SD editing...don't know if the HD still has this bug...i use 1080i (FX1) n this drag still exist maybe in 720p or 1080p we will not face this anymore...

it looks like there is problem with deinterlace

add a clip on timeline and apply 20% slomo on a clip with pan or person walking sideways

try deinterlace always and then try none

there is no difference
