  • scratch noise gopro8 footage in edius

Hi, with the gopro 8 I filmed in 2.7K and when editing in edius I hear a scratch noise in the sound until I render it. Playing the footage in windows itself I don't hear these noise scratches. Is this a setting issue in edius? with gopro5 footage this was never a problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Best regards, jw

what are the audio settings of the gopro clip

ideally they should be 16bit or 24bit and 48k, avoid 44.1k or 32k

what are the audio settings of the EDIUS project settings?

Hi Anton, the audio settings of the gopro clip are 24bit, 2ch, 48k,, 204kbps in a 2.7k clip and 189kbps n a 1920x1080 clip. With the gopro 5 the difference was the kbps, then it was 132 kbps. 16bit
The audio settings in edius are: Sampling Rate : 48000Hz Bit Depth : 24 Bit
      Channel : 2

can you provide a screenshot of mediainfo in tree view of one of the gopro clips so we can see the audio section

or send a problem clip via antonsvideo.wetransfer.com

Hi Anton, sorry for my late reactie. Even in these corona times too much things to do ;-)

I send you 2 screenshots MediaInfo and I will send you a problem clip with wetransfer.

However, I noticed that the issue starts when I turn the clip in the layouter. Before that there is not a problem with the audio. Afterwards the scratch noise comes in.

I have rotated the clip 180 degrees where needed and I can't hear any scratch noise

can you make sure project setting is set to 2 channel 48k audio

do you have Quicktime enabled or disabled in system settings?

try this, prior to rotating the clip, convert it to HQX which will then have PCM wave audio, or mark in and out on clip and print to file, audio, PCM wave, then place the wave below the clip and mute the clips audio to hear if scratch noise goes away

the clip has an unusual frame rate of 119.88 fps

also, what is the state of the buffer on the EDIUS taskbar when you hear scratch noise

in my case buffer is 129/129

if I apply optical flow to the clip, the buffer is 1/129 and I hear scratch noise (on my older office PC)

no buffer issue on main PC as in signature

Hi Anton, the project was already set to 48k 2ch. I set it again to this.
QT was set disabled. I just set it to enabled. No result.
I also did print to file, audio PCM wave as you suggested, placed it below etc and the noise still exists (before rendering).
The framerate 119.88 is the gopro framerate. I didnt adjust that myself. By the way, I used to have a gopro5 and there where no issues with that one in edius.

I also checked the buffer and in my case the buffer, when it is rotated, is 1/1000. In normal view it goes up to 1000/1000.

As you saw in the (windsurf)clip it was very windy and the noise of the wind leads to the scratchy noise. I tried other clips with no wind with a 180 rotation and then there was no noise. So it seems when there is a lot of wind in combination with the rotation it results in the scratchy noise. The only solution is to render the rotated clip, the buffer after rendering is 1000/1000 and the noise is gone. Maybe I'll have to deal with it ;-)

the scratch noise is caused by the buffer drop 1/1000, after exporting, there should be no noise

There should be no buffer drop because of simple rotate? Unless you have optical flow set as default, which you should not do

Field option settings are the same as yours. So frame blending is set as default.

I just tried to pre fill the buffer with shift-spacebar and it filled to 1000 but while playing it drops to 1/1000

as soon as the buffer drops to 1, you will hear crackle, because frames are dropped
in my case, the buffer does not drop with your clip, the clip is on an SSD

ok. I checked it and put the clip also on a SSD (samsung ssd 960 evo) but still the buffer drops when it's rotated. Also when it's on a extern drive like a WDmy book.

I just adjusted the speed to 50% and guess what happened. The buffer doesn't drops and there are no noises. At 80% it drops slowly.

ahahh, you were applying a speed change

how did you apply it? in the bin prior to dragging to timeline by changing frame rate in clip properties? correct way

when on timeline via speed change, incorrect way
