  • Edius Export Problem with H264

    Hi there,
i have a big problem with my h264 exports out of Edius (8.5.3)
My customer (Broadcaster in Cologne) rejects my exports. They do not run
in his playout system beacause of 50 fps framerate.

My project is standard 1920x1080 50I (interlaced upper field first) nothing special.
when i export the timeline the resulting h264´s show 50fps in Mediainfo and also in ffmpeg. Did i miss someting?

    Thanks!!

    Edius Export Problem with H264

    Hi there!

i have an export problem with Edius 8.5.3 and H264 (build in)
The Project settings are standard 1920x1080 50i interlaced upper f first.

Our local broadcaster rejects my h264 export files because of 50 fps.
They do not run in their Playout system (tools on air - just play)

My H264 exports seem to have 50 FPS ? how ist that possible?? a flag error??
please see the attachment for Media Info readout and the project settings.
What Media info say´s is impossible.. same with ffmpeg...

These files play fine everywhere: vlc player, sat receiver, Mobile phone

Loading them back into edius they are 25 fps.

    Thanks for your help!

    Frank

why don't you exports the clip as a MXF format.
its much better than an mp4.

Greetings Frank. I should have been in Cologne next week where my step children live and work.
I have run across this problem before. In the UK we have a clearance procedure for TV ads called Clearcast. Their clearance platform auto checking uploaded files rejects Edius MP4 files. The final delivery to the broadcaster is MXF but for the clearance files MP4 is acceptable. I would suggest you make an HQX file and feed it to Handbrake. You can add tff=1 to the extras box to give you an iinterlaced file. Lots of posts here about Handbrake.

          Edius Export Problem with H264

          @ ulyssesvideo
Thanks for replying! How would i create a .mxf with h264 inside edius?
besides these are only wrapper (container) the customer is asking for h264.
i would like to know what is happening in Edius that it is creating a 50fps file?

          @ DigitalDave
          also thanks for replying!

Yeah these are difficult times for us all... i had to be in the us for a few weeks
          but they rejected me also..:(

Yes the export hqx and handbrake is a good option. and i wil have to do this.
(i suppose i could also buy pegasus tmpgenc movie plug in with x264)

but again.. what happens in Edius creating a 50fps file for no reason?

          Thanks!

Frank, I think you are confusing frames and fields. Try exporting at 25p (frames per second) which is equivalent to 50 fields per sec.

Frank, Here is the post I flagged this in 2 years ago. https://forum.grassvalley.com/forum/...ad.php?t=41639

JimG if you look at this post you will see the issue which is picked up on autochecking software.

Anton has stated in that thread that the BUG is fixed in 9.4

25P is not the same as 50 fields per sec. Can be stated as 25fps but not 25P. Same for NTSC 29.97P is not the same as 59.94fields per sec but is 29.97fps. Temporal motion of 59.94i is the same as 59.94P. Same in PAL. The confusion results from timecode for interlaced video. The timecode increments every field sequence of one odd and one even field, the interlace sync pulse. That is every two fields. Hence the confusion since the timecode is half the field rate. Same for PAL. So if you want to get the same smooth motion people see on their TV you need to shoot at 50P or 60P. Since it looks like lots of TV station still broadcast interlace then their source looks like being interlace. Shooting 50P or 60P ( 59.94P ) one can get all the options but shooting at 25P or 29.97P then the smooth motion of the interlaced or progressive frame rates( 50i, 50P, 60i,60P ) is lost. Can put 50P( 59.94P ) on an interlaced timeline and get interlaced output or also on the slower frame rate timelines and get the slower frame rate cadence if that is desired.

this issue is solved in EDIUS9

also, you are exporting with a Main profile, you need to use High for HD

Thank you guys, that´s what i wanted to know. it´s bug solved since 9.4
Anton, the broadcaster has it in the spec´s:

                    (fertige Sendung zur Ausstrahlung)
                    Video:
                    1920x1080i25
                    1920 x 1080 Pixel | interlaced | 50 Halbbilder/s | Top Field First
                    Codec:
                    h.264 | Main Profile | 15 Mbit/s | CBR
                    Audio:
                    AAC | 192 kbps | Stereo | 48 kHz | 16 Bit |
                    gepegelt nach EBU R128
                    Container: .mp4
                    Dateilänge=Sendelänge
(Datei darf keinen Vor- oder Abspann enthalten)

Do you think this is a good broadcast format? besides of Ml or HL
could it better be VBR? for the codec to work better?
                    Thanks in advance!

You can only supply what they ask for in their specs. What we think is academic. Most local stations have lower specs than the national broadcasters. I suspect that ARD or ZDF would not accept MP4.
BTW I'm deeply depressed at not getting back to Oma Kleinmann next weekend!!!

with EDIUS 9.52 you will need to deselect hardware encoder (if available) because the software encoding of 25fps top field first will be very good at CBR 15Mbits/s and also 4 times faster compared to EDIUS8 which was very slow in software encoding
