  • Problem with 265 mp4 file at high bitrate (50Mbs and above)

I have a project, filmed with the Sony AX-700, UHD, rec709, 8 bit, progressive. Matching projectsettings in Edius. Project looks fine in the player.
First export was with H265 HEVC VBR 50Mbs and 70 Mbs as max. On a pc I saw artifacts, on my television (Samsung QLED Q7 2018) I saw artifacts and flickering in the high midtones.
Next an export as HQX Superfine in Edius and then Handbrake with CBR at 50Mbs. No more artifacts, but still flickering in the high midtones. Very noticable. It looks like filming tl-lights with the wrong shutterspeed.

I read somewhere that the 265 and 264 codec have some trouble at high bitrates. Any comment on that?
I have no idea where to look to correct this. The television is relative new and high quality. So is the material used. Is it the codec or some stupid mistake I made?

Chris, you will need to get someone with a 7700k forward to test this for you.
Were you using a 10bit project? Did you try creating a 10bit file?
Handbrake evidently process in 8-bit only.
Did you try using Lanczos Hi Quality?

I do not have H.265 capabilities with my 4790k. However, here is an HDR 10-bit UHD 50p at 100Mbps file I did using the MW7 trial.
Load the file on a thumb drive and try it on your QLED. I'm not seeing flickering on my LG LED HDR HD.
Let me know if you do see flickering. If so, I can try testing it on an OLED and QLED here.

      Jerry,

      Thanks for above.

It is no HDR, just simple straightforward rec.709, 8 bit, progressive, UHD. I did not expect any problem. Since I have this very visable problem, I wonder what is going on.

Did you watch my file? I'm curious if you see flickering.

You should still try exporting your file as a 10bit file. At least to see if there is any difference.

Is there a frame rate mismatch. AX700 I believe will shoot 25 P or 30 P UHD and I expect the TV displays at 50P.

That TV should play all frame rates and distinguish the frame rate for each file played. I know my LG does.
