Excuse me for not understanding your question but is AFF an audio file format? I realize that .aiff, the old Amiga Computer audio interleaved file format was chosen as the Mac audio format but are AFF and aiff even comparable in terms of application?

It is essentially a data exchange format that allows you to export a timeline or project from one software and import it into another software. Kind of like an edl or xml exchange.
AIFF is an audio file format, similar to a wav file.
As such, there are no "handles" in an aiff or wav because the file is the file. An AAF can have handles assigned if the creation of it is also set to condense the used media to just the areas on the timeline with "handles".
The AAF then just points to the new media (wav, aiff, mov, etc.). If handles were specified, the new media is a little larger than what was actually used on the timeline, so that there is room to tweak things like fades.
"Handles" essentially just means that you are given a little bit more media than the timeline actually shows.

That's why I asked, because it seemed an apples and oranges comparison. I looked-up AFF and was wondering why one would think an audio file would be anything other than an audio file.

Sorry Jim. The way you phased your reply, read like you had not looked up any info because you asked "as AAF an audio file format?" instead of stating that it is not an audio file format.
I wasn't trying to pick on you or anything, just laying out the facts. Perhaps I should not have quoted your reply.
Again, my apologies.
