  • EX-1 question

Holy crap this is getting confusing. I did read the prior EX-1 thread but:

    1) If I upgrade from PRO to Broadcast can I still use my existing Storm card?
    2) In real life, is my dual Xeon 3.2 computer strong enough?
    3) Will my existing SD monitors be useable?
    4) Any suggestions on what problems to anticipate?

I have not been working in HD but I am taking the plunge this week and buying the EX-1

    Thanks in advance,
    Gunn

Yes to Storm card, meaning it will work just like it does now but only in SD resolutions...all Broadcast does is add some modules that Pro doesn't have....but seriously if you are going to move to that camera you should get an Nx card to monitor the true HD res. Storm will not give you monitor out in an HD preset but you can open that same project in a DV or D1 preset and see it in SD(Edius will scale the HD res to SD and Storm will output it).
That camera makes a very highly compressed, high bitrate, long gop mp2 in a proprietary wrapper much like HDV(except it can be true 1920 as opposed to 1440). You will battle with dual xeons at 3.2(it is an 800mhz fsb right?) and lose if you want to edit the native files. You will probably not like the RT but can get by if you transcode the native files to Canopus HQ. If you are used to editing DV on that machine you will hate how sluggish it will be with even HQ...if you have any of the sample footage from the Canopus Cds play with it and make your own judgments.
As far as the monitor it will be fine for looking at HD in an SD project setting downrezed and it is fine for true SD projects but if you want to see all the glory that the camera brings you will need an LCD and an NX card.

      To add to this:
By using the full raster 1920x1080 setting you will reduce your RT performance by a bunch even with HQ files. At this point, how are you capturing your footage? Firewire, HDSDI ?

I capture by HDMI and analog to 1920x1080 and can get pretty good RT on 4-5 lines of footage....as long as there is nothing complicated.
Your issue will be the FSB. My core 2 extreme is running at 3.3 and 1280'ish
FSB. My quad is at 3.01 and around 1200 fsb. This pushes the signal just a little bit faster. Make sure to use a least 2gb memory and have a fast raid.
