Capture not highlighted

Trying to load footage from Mini Dv Sony camcorder through FireWire connector.
No overlay appears when camera is on pause. Nor is capture highlighted .
When I was working with Edius 7 software asked me to chose which device I am using then I could proceed to activate capture . I like to capture on the fly and not use batch capture time codes. Is my problem in matching project settings with camcorder? Help needed. Thanks. Other consumer editing software “sees”
Camcorder and allows capture. Confused.

Short create a device preset, this optional (assign it to an input preset)
From the capture menu either choose your assigned input preset or go to select input device and choose it there.
Capture away.
