EX1 Files -- Edius ? --> HDMI Out

Hello All,

I've been reading through dozens of topics but still confused about HDMI output w/ Edius Pro :)

EX1 files which go through Sony's Clip Browser can be converted to MXF files which Edius Pro can play. That i've tested. I don't have my camera yet (coming next week) but have tried it using sample clips from the internet.
I can even export the timeline to an mpeg2 file and create a blu-ray disk or dvd and play on a PS3 - all good.

Now if i just want to "play" the timeline to an HD TV (1080 P LCD) over HDMI - can't we use a Black Magic Intensity card? BMI says that it the intensity card is compatible with any Direct Show capable application. Edius hardware settings allow us to choose a Direct Show device, so would that work ?
I saw a thread that says you cannot output from Edius through Intensity to a HDTV over HDMI so thought i'd confirm

OK - in case that is "not possible", then what would we use to output our files for full preview when using edius. Would we have to create a an WMV or MOV file and use Media Player or Quicktime to display the video?

I know I could print to HDV tape or burn to blu-ray but that involves encoding and burning time i'd like to avoid.

Big Questions:

What is the simplest way to show all EX1 files from a shoot (say a wedding) end to end to a HD TV with HDMI or Component input from a computer (windows) and not from the camera itself ( i know cam can do component out). Basically i want to play wedding footage from start to finish on a 26-32 inch display (HD)

What about HDLINK and outputting over DVI to a LCD 'monitor' like an apple cinema display. The video will be 1080p. Is that better than the HDMI route>

Does output over DVI to a LCD 'computer monitor' come out as good or better than a LCD 'tv' over HDMI

None of the Edius cards have HDMI out...however, Edius HD (very expensive) has HD-SDI, which is not supported by consumer devices. Your best bet is component via the NX to the LCD/Plasma TV. You will get superb quality this way. It will be HD via Component (You will need BNC to RCA cables since the NX component connections are BNC). Cost of NX ~$1,200

Your other bet is to burn a BluRay disc right from the timeline, then play that disc on your designated BD player which is connected via HDMI.

Black Magic cards will not work with Edius, since they are competitors. However, the BM files should load fine in Edius, but outputting is another story.

Hopefully GV comes up with a low priced HDMI card (not pegasus) for EDIUS, I think it would sell well.

I agree, NX is the better solution. No rendering until i have the final edit done, no burning to Blue-ray etc.

EX1 records up to1080p resolution. Does component out of the NX
support 1080p?

And what about DVI or HDMI output from regular grafic card (GeForce nx8600GT) ???
This card supports HDTV. I can play HD video out to plasma screen.

Is it possile ti send Edius ovelay there ???

Ok let me get in here. I have Intensity Pro card on my number 2 computer.
This has all of my Adobe editing stuff on it. The BM cards are designed for Premiere Pro and other Adobe programs. It will NOT work with Edius. No way, no how...at least at this time. I doubt that will happen....unless BM opens it up.
To play back you mpeg2 file you have to have it in either After Effects or Premiere Pro to output to your monitor. When I play a video within windows medea on this machine, it does not feed out to monitor.

As far as the NX, it does NOT accelerate the feed. You mentioned no rendering, well that depends on what you have on the timeline. The NX card is much like the Intensity Card, it captures and playsback to monitor in RT(based on computer horsepower). Keep that in mind!

GV said last NAB that there would be three flavors of new boards that would come out in the next year that had some type of HD SDI or HDMI. We have seen the Pegasus appear so let's hope that we see other offerings by this NAB.

I have a gigabyte S3H mainboard.it has VGA card onboard which able to output HD/SD-I , HDMI and DV-I... do u think i could output the timeline with one of them?

They need to have new cards to keep up much like when composite moved to S video ..component RGB CAN handle 1080p but you have to check to see if the monitor will take 1080p over RGB. Also they probably need a new driver for Nx to output 1080p over component and my guess is right now it doesn't. As to quality between HDMI 1080p and RGB there is none...

HDMI lives for one reason...Hollywood movie copyright protection. It also give cable manufacturers another expensive cable to sell. But HDMI (like S-video in its time) is the new wave. What I wonder about is what are you pros who are heavy into HD doing about the audio. Even with the high dollar HD-SDI card you are still limited to balanced stereo....seems a waste to have HD-SDI video monitoring for 15k and stereo audio monitoring. HDMI does give you some nice audio input/output.

No. There's no software "connection" between WMP or QT player and the Intensity card--that's what plug-ins for Premiere, AE, Photoshop, FCP, Motion, etc. do, create that connection. The Intensity does come with a capture/player utility, but I'm not sure of the full range of files that it will play out through HDMI.

You used the wrong quote. That was a quote from the previous poster that I added to the top.

The capture/player utility will play out and show capture in realtime full screen, depending on your system. It has a tab at the top that says play or capture and it highlights when chosen. You will be able to capture either uncompressed 8bit or MJPEG 8bit with the Inensity. That is all that will play through the utility player. However, within Premiere Pro it will play whatever is put on the timeline....as long as it is a file that is accepted by Premiere and BM.

HDMI was derived from DVI. There are many reasons why HDMI is better than analog component.

It can carry high quality audio in a single cable...even higher quality master audio that not even optical can handle.

I love HDMI. One cable for everything. Simplifies alot.

However, for broadcast work, I don't see it as a requirement..

I have an Intensity too. I simply haven't used the utility beyond a brief glance.
