  • nx express or edius sp board

am getting new computer for 4.5 and dont want to use ohci. i hate the delay and i like using an external monitor. that being the case , i can either go with the nx express board or the edius sp board. what are the differences?
can i use dv capture with either of these?
will they work like the storm card where i be able to use an external monitor and not have the delay.pricewise how much is each.
    thanks

SP includes EDIUS Broadcast and component capture in (standard definition only) or the more expensive SP SDI (standard def SDI connection)...

The SP is like the replacement for the REX
While the NX is the replacement for the Storm. Both do HD.

The SP is great for people who still have Beta SP sources or even other component SD sources, but I would go with the NX. It's an awesome card. Very stable and a quality product.

NX works with DVCapture, not sure about SP...it should work, theoretically.

The price difference is a kind of big, the SP (non SDI) is about $3,500 while the NX is about $1,400.

And no you will not get any lag with either cards. Perfect sync just like the Storm.

One cool thing about the NX is that, besides doing HD, it also can act as a regular firewire pass through device, so you can use other OHCI applications (Such as Premiere CS3) to pass through out the component output (DV only)...also you can capture to Canopus HQ/Lossless from the analog source instead of capturing to DV only like the Storm did.

Check canopus.com for comparisons between both products.

The difference between the NX and the SP is the type of I/O that you get.
The SP adds component (SD) inputs, XLR auido I/O, and RS422 device control. Think of it this way: If you are using Beta SP get the SP.

Both cards capture DV the same way.
Both cards output to an external monitor without delay.

Actually, the standard SP has dropped in price significantly in the last 6 months. In North America, the SP without the Breakout Box now carries a list price of $1,800; the SP with the Breakout Box now carries a list price of $2,300.

But, as StormDave says, unless you need the SD analog component and XLR audio ingest, the NX Express will do you fine as they are identical when it comes to the realtime playout to an external monitor in both SD and HD.

Jimbo... Unless you have changed things drastically since I have been there last you are fine with the NX Express :)
