  • Disc Burner Problem

Using Edius 7 Pro Disc Burner, when I attempted to burn a DVD of the project I received the message "Encountered an improper argument". I've never seen that one before.

Unable to print the DVD but I am able to create an MPEG file (minus the chapter markers). I changed the project setting to Lanczos3 but still unable to print the disc. Any suggestions please?

Do you have an in and out set on the timeline? EDIUS only does DVDs between in and out and if that is too small it will not export a DVD.

Attached screen shot of my Lanczos3 and standard DV settings and the Clip info. The footage was shot in 480 30p. Might that be the problem? Trying to convert it to DVD.

The project is set to 29.97 and your footage seems to be the same but even if it was 30fps EDIUS should just convert it.

If the in and out are very close together then there is not enough timeline to make a DVD. Get rid of them and see if you can get into burn to disc. If it still does not work that is not the problem.

Exactly when does it say "Encountered an improper argument". When you try to get into burn to disc? When you have set up menus and click burn?

The timeline project is over an hour long, and the In/Out covers the full length, so that's not the problem.

I can open the Export options, but when I click the Burn to Disc button a popup says "Encountered improper argument" then shuts down the Disc Burner function.

How long is the bit between the in and the out? the timeline can be 10 hours long but if the in and out is set to 5 seconds burn to disc will try to export 10 seconds. Get rid of the in and out - do you still get the error.

When you say you can open the export options but when you click burn to disc it has the error what does this mean? I asked at what point do you get the error when trying to burn to disc.
When you try to open it?
When you have burn to disc open and go to the sequence tab?
When you go to the menu tab and customise a menu?
When you click the burn button on the last tab?

When it happens may give a clue as to what is happening but I cannot work out when from what you are saying.

I shot this project in 30p 480 because I knew it was going to a DVD. I had never used this camera format before. Is the clips format the problem? I thought that Lanczos could convert it if nec.

The problem seemed to be related to the Marker/chapter points. I removed all of them from the timeline and the Disc Burner worked fine. I replaced the markers and now the Disc Burner works fine. For some reason it didn't like some or all of the markers?

never set a marker at the start, the disk burner does that automatically

The starting marker wasn't the problem. Actually the marker at the 14 minute mark was the problem! When I removed it the burner worked fine. I had several markers before the 14 min mark and several after it. I deleted them all and replaced them with new markers - with one still at the 14 min point - and everything worked fine. Strange.

and remember, never use a project setting with lower field first unless you are planning on printing to DV tape

everything else requires upper field first (when working interlaced)

I would only be printing to DVD, not DV tape. So always use Upper field first for DVD?
