I decided to think out of the box.
I opened up other projects and tried the same disolves and Batch Exporting with Generic MPEG settings and they all worked fine.
It seems the disolves don't work correctly only in one particular project!
I've finished the project by rendering manually.
Let's chalk up this little one as "Unexplained".
If it happens again, maybe there will be some other clues.
Anton: Thanks for your help and time.

    no, don't reformat

can I get the exact steps you take when you add to batchlist, including all settings video and audio wise

maybe there is a unique combination that causes this

Whoops. I looked on the wrong machine.

My editing computer with Edius has Quicktime Player 7.16, similar to yours.

I'm wondering if it's time to reformat the system drive and reinstall Edius clean.

    I'd rather not.

I know that 7.2 was the cause of many problems so I reverted back to 7.1

I have not tried 7.3 (waiting for the dust to settle)

only a stab in the dark, it may have nothing to do with your problem

    Apple Quicktime 7.3.
    Could that be affecting this?
    Thanks for helping me.

yes, that is exactly how I tested and it worked fine

I tried mpeg (generic) and also Mpeg2 media edge presets

does your PC have QuicktimePlayer installed and what is the version number?

can I see a screenshot of the timeline section marked with in and out to be exported

I tried all clips on VA track 2 and all dissolves come out fine when batch exporting using mpeg2 presets

    All clips on same track.

ok, let me test again, before I do, a few questions

are you AB type editing, clip1 on VA1 and clip2 on VA2 and clip3 on VA1 etc??

or are you placing clips on same track and adding dissolve in between?

    More info:
This problem only happens when I use the Batch Exporter. When I use the exact same MPEG2 presets with Print To File and render them immediately, it renders correctly.
This means I have to babysit all my rendering.
    Very disappointing.

    Thanks Anton.
    I just upgraded to 4.54.
No change when rendering using MPEG2 presets.
I even deleted and replaced the disolve transitions but still they fade to black at the overlap point.

However, I dragged the same clips and disolves from Track 2VA up to Track 3VA and tried rendering. It rendered the disolves perfectly using the same presets!

But when I put those clips and disolves back on Track 2VA and render, the problem returns: fading to black during disolves.
It seems specific to Track 2VA. Is there some setting that can affect just one VA track?

Segment Encode is off when rendering.
It's Edius Pro version 4.51C (It's not Broadcast..I posted in the wrong forum).

What version of EDIUS are you running?
Do you have the "SegmentEncode" option enabled? (If so, try disabling it)
