  • Edius in a News Truck for deadline editing

Hi gang, I am looking fo folks who are currently using Edius on a Laptop
in a news van, as their editing platform. Also am looking for feed back on speed with both SD and HD playback thru microwave. I am new to Edius,
still punching my way around, but so far I like what I see. Anyone want to share some "field insights"????

    Welcome to the Forum Karen.
I don't do news, but I do (do) Same-day edits with Edius and it smokes the competition for getting done on time. Laptops work fine, but are cramped for me. I prefer Shuttle systems for portable work. The Sony external drives are fantastic for fast file transfer leaving tape in the dust.

Good to see Guerneville is still high and dry (for now) :)

HI Karen. A couple of us train TV stations in just this kind of set up. Mike Downey is really the main expert with the news dept. But please feel free to ask any questions here or PM me.

I'll let our other news customers and related folks answer your main question, but I do feel I should bring up two very important things:
        1. If you have a USB key (aka "dongle") make sure it's well protected - both from theft and physical damage. Some laptops (I have an Alienware that does) have a "hidden" USB port that's recessed in the case. This is a perfect place to install the dongle so it doesn't stick out and get damaged.
        2. Since you're using laptops - make sure they're well-secured. I've heard stories about laptops going missing in the field. If you don't tether it to a fixed object, tether it to the user - on a belt with a quick-release, etc.

Edius is great in a laptop environment. ENG fields should be very pleased with it.

If you are using solid state media such as P2, it's much much easier.

              Hi there
I am doing lot of field editing for a TV station, I use Edius on a laptop and works grate. And when i am using a link to the TV station playing live or just feeding them, wireles or not, i use TLM-70D monitor from datavideo as a converter.

                portable edius solutions?

Hi, pardon my ignorance but how do we go about capturing from a deck on a portable ENG edius solution? Is there a special canopus card available that will go into a laptop?

I need to be on the road with a sports team in the next few weeks and am wondering whether we could do it with the canopus-edius solution using a laptop?

                Thanks
                George

                  Wow,
This thread started in Dec. '07, and a lot has changed!
Laptops work great without extra hardware, but color correction is difficult without monitoring. (no matter what systen you use)
I used mine on a Same-Day Edit in lake Tahoe last weekend... a real pleasure.
We only used footage from my EX1, so there was less guesswork on the road.

If I had my way, I'd have a second monitor for more screen real estate.

For laptops, get one that comes with Firewire 400. Then configure EDIUS for OHCI. What deck you have there?

Edius through laptop to satellite on live truck

Hi, I work at a news station that uses Edius. I worked at another station that was able to stream Laptop feeds from Final Cut directly through the satellite truck without having to export the Edius project to a camera and then export it that way. You wouldn't know if their is an easy way to do this?

I see stations all the time that microwave out directly from the EDIUS timeline. It depends on your truck hardware.
