Anyway, after eleven years of doing it this way you're not going to teach this old dog a new trick.

I agree with the "old dog" portion!

Ahh got it now..... Thanks. Some of my projects do go to broadcast. I use a transfer house to set up the masters with all the correct NTSC specs.

Admittedly my work doesn't involve broadcast, but the highschool broadcast that I teach distributes programs to about 150 classrooms over an in-house distribution system and I can visually see no difference between leaving a blank space and using a matte. I've assumed, probably wrongly, that it was putting out the proper black level. Anyway, after eleven years of doing it this way you're not going to teach this old dog a new trick. ;-)

A matte is not a filter, but rather a color "clip".

Go to File > New > Color Matte. The default should be NTSC black (16/16/16) click ok and you will have a new clip on the timeline. Use this as a placeholder for your 30 seconds. I wouldn't leave an area blank.

Thanks stormdave, so you put a black matte filter on the timeline before the show? I assume you need to create filler space for 30 seconds and apply the matte filter? How do you place a filter where no video clip exists? Am I thinking correctly here?

Just put a black color matte for 30 seconds, then start the show :)

If the tape is going to a broadcast station, there are some rules to follow. First comes color bars then black.

    Print to tape question...

I would like to blank the screen with black for 30 seconds when printing to tape. Is there a setting I am missing to accomplish this? I guess you could put 30 seconds of blank space on the timeline. Is there a setting? Thanks.

I am using 4.54 and really liking it.
