  • Video card seems to have fixed Edius freezes

Straight to the point: I yanked the nvidia 6600 from my Edius NX system and replaced it with an e-GeForce nVidia 8800GT and the freezing that has plagued my system since Edius 4 seems to have evaporated with the switch.

I've suspected the 6600 for awhile, and my turnkey system (running Edius 3) has been prone to crashing. Tech support confirmed an issue with the card, and this switch has the system running the best it ever has.

Since the upgrade to Edius 4, my system would freeze at any given moment, for no discernible reason. So far, since the nVidia 8800GT replacement, I haven't experienced the slightest glitch (knock on wood). Edius 4.54 is really quite great to work with.

I do not like any of the Nvidia 6xxx series cards. You did a wise thing to dump it.

I did exactly the same thing 2 days ago - out with 6600 in with 8800GT - no freezes since.

I had read a few of your posts and it seemed like we were experiencing the same problem. So far, so good! Glad it worked out well on your end too!

I've been running an ASUS 6600 with no problems. Driver 93.71. I must be lucky.

You folks should also list the brand of card you are using when you mention a video card, like Beachside did, manuf construct boards with the same chipset different ways, some use generic chipset drivers, some need special drivers becasuse of proprietary stuff added to roms on board.

The card that was giving me trouble was the GeForce nVidia 6600. The replacement to the e-nVidia 8800GT also fixed a few annoyances with other programs that I had noticed (that I hadn't considered were caused by the graphics card).

Here is a partial note from the Canopus Tech Support:

"We have also noticed problems with Nvidia 6600 video card (30 plus cards
failed or swapped out) reliability. They are Nvidia 6600 128MB or
256MB, WinFast and equivalent. They eventually started locking up the
system (usually within a year) during editing and eventually Windows is
affected. We use BurnInTest by www.passmark.com to confirm our
defective cards. The problem usually has to do with failure in 2D draw
              (memory address) corruption."

OK, my 8800GT 512 is made by BFG, purchased through Novatec in the UK. The drivers that arrive with the board, on a CD, are NVIDIA issue, but DO NOT WORK with Edius. Download Forceware 192.02 and all is well. This is a great card and really gives a kick to GPU renderers like Vitascene and Red Giant "Looks"

Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.

By the way, I love the note from Tech support, I and others have been banging on about this problem on the forum for months, and yet no one from GV had anything to say about the 6600 being bad until I noticed it was not one of the cards in the supported list on the Canopus site, and decided to dump the 6600 for something else.

Really to be fair, there have been posts off and on about problems with the 6600 for quite a while. This is not the first.

Since the debut of the Storm card, I have been an ardent fan of Canopus products. When there have been bumps to work through, I have found the user forum and tech support to usually be quite enthusiastic in helping find a solution.

Some of the popular competitor’s products that I have used did not benefit from the same reasonable considerations towards their end user. As a result, I no longer use their products.

I must confess though, it was a much nicer touch when we could pick up the phone and call tech support directly, rather than the form service that is utilized now.

However, my experiences with Canopus, the user forum and tech support have been wonderfully positive.

I think you'll get more support on this forum than any other company where you have to hold on the line until they find a document for it...and if you are having a unique problem, good luck to the company trying to find a solution :)

This forum is priceless, and from what I've seen over the years even on the old forum, people are really quick in answering questions. There is alot of interaction from great GV guys like BH, KH, MD, etc. all around.

Before I discovered this forum, I had nightmares getting tech support on official Canopus site. I registered my products under US Canopus site. When I went in to try to send emails, I found the site insists on diverting me to China Canopus - okay - sounds fine - until I got myself thrown out of China Canopus because I don't have any h/w or s/w registrations there. Grrrr !!!!

I can't pick up the phone either - because that will entrails an international call across the Pacific Ocean. Besides the cost of the call, there's also time differences to be considered. I can't call Canopus China either - because I don't speak Mandarin - only English !!!!

So much so for Tech Support in Singapore. Of course, I could go through the agents - but, it means I have to relay my problems to the agents (hoping they get the message correct) and wait for a longer response.

Dave I can only concur with you on this, I came from some of those other products and the forums were full of crash reports and calls for help and none was forth coming. When I ventured into HD I am sure I was at the head of the charge and there was no help in site.
In shear desperation I turned to Canopus knowing their editing cards like RT had been extremely stable and found I could download the trial version that was not just a trial version, all I had to do was ADD the registration code, not like some that require more than uninstall but going into registry to fully remove or the REAL product will not work!
I am sure the reason this forum is so good is that we are working with a product that is stable, REALLY works and has an extremely fast work format.
OK there are some problems with the titler and a few other things including Editing cards and conflicts with programs that people load, I have chosen to not use these and use Edius as software only and am not disappointed, I watch friends having unbelievable problems with other programs and being unprepared to change because they are working with what they consider are "Professional Programs", my output is "4" times theres and they are still working in SD. So far as I am concerned Edius IS a professional program and that goes back to the definition of the word.
Keep up the good work GV, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.
