  • Can't apply transitions between two clips

Why can i apply any of all my transitions (2D, 3D, ...) between two clips? The clips are made onder the same video setting on my camera and in Edius 8Pro!
If i drag a transition between two clips, i can't drop it down between them, it's only possible to drop it down under the video track (mix) and only under one or the other clip, also not between the two clips. (See the two attachments)
Is there anyone who can help me with my problem please?
    Thanks anyway...

You need some overlap on the clips to apply an effect and those have no overlap, the little black triangle signify the beginning or end of a clip. Drag the ends of each clip back a few frames ( what ever you decide the time of the transition ) then butt together and the transition will work. All you could do with no over lap is fade out and fade in.

The other option is to untick the "Extend Clips when applying Transition/Crossfade" under Settings<>User Settings<>Timeline

Yes one needs to do that to make what I indicated work but not sufficient if the clips are not shortened to create that extra space. However the image shown had no space as the clips show black triangles indicating end of clip. They need to be shorted, then butted together for any transition like a dissolve to work which needs that extra overlap video from each clip.

            Sorry to disagree Ron
If the :Extend clips is disabled the timeline is shortened and the clips are merged for Xfade try it and see
I have placed a button on the timeline to toggle this for when I have these problems

EDIT You may run into problems if there are other clips on tracks below or above that cannot move so then you wuld need to unlock the track from the others, but this could unsync titles audio etc
As his timeline does not show any clips on aother tracks that should bot be a problem
            Regards Barry

Yes I understand too. As you mentioned if you have other tracks or sync audio it can create a problem if done automatically. My main point was that the triangles indicate the limits of the clip and to use a transition one needs that extra video from each clip however that is achieved. I just prefer to do that manually.

Ron has already given you the answer. Trim your clips from the outside edges back in to allow for the transition. Think about what you are wanting to achieve that is one clip fading or transitioning into the next. In your case your clips ate at there respective end and start points (indicated by the black triangles at each clips start and end) this means there is no more clip material to transition so you need to trim to create material for the transition, it's really quite simple, think about it. If you are not really editing and just want to slap some transitions between a bunch of random clips then there is a setting that can be changed and also a timeline button that can be added to the timeline tool bar. Look for them in user settings.

I have never had the need to add transitions to untrimmed clips, because no matter how good a cameraman you are, you can't shoot perfect from start to end of clip

I always roll a few seconds before my actions starts and still roll a few seconds when the action finishes

anything else is called in camera edit and that is not for me, never will be

Imagine doing an in-camera edit with footage from a GH4 or GH5, this would be a sound dropout disaster from what I have been reading

There are many different shooting styles and some such as news there are occassions when you don't get a choice in when you start rolling. I'm always editing in my head as I'm shooting and in some situations in camera also especially for news or unscripted live action when there is minimal time for editorial it can be very helpful. What I'm trying to say is never say never as getting good material to tell the story demands flexibility dictated by the work one is doing at the time.

If you are assembling one clip at a time then Barry's approach works OK with the maybe added step of changing transition length too as needed. Great for holiday or family stuff where you want as much of the clip as possible. Visually Vegas is better at this as one just moves one clip over the other for exactly the amount needed.

For my main projects I am with Anton as I usually have maybe 2 or 3 mins of the source that I do not use in the final edit. Mine are theatre shoots and I start cameras as soon as the doors close. Depending on overture music it can be 5 mins before the performance starts.

That is why I am not bothered by the 7 frame audio delay on the GH5 !!

Occasionally when I have a clip that must run from the beginning/end frame (no leeway) and must use a transition to avoid a gross jump cut I will use a still of the first/last frame in the transition and try to keep the transition short.
