  • Time Remap

    Howdy,

I spend an awful lot of time re syncing visual material of musicians playing and or singing to final CD audio, after shooting recording sessions and or rehearsals
    and live performances.

This produces a number of difficulties, from a studio recording session, the final audio master will be made of a combination of takes, as well as slight changes to the overall pace, ie. rests will be lengthened, or shortened etc.

Very often jazz and classical performers can play incredibly close to their final recordings, but inevitably there are differences, and these, when shot HD at close quarters ( say a piano keyboard ) are seriously obvious.

Using After Effects and Premiere Pro Time Remapping is the best way to sort these errors out, but it's all a bit long winded.

Is there a possibility that the Edius Time Remap utility will be upgraded to allow keyframed speed changes, say in version 4.6 or version 5.0 or whatever comes as the next paid for big upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any specific information, I realise that developments are kept "hush hush" but a nod would be enough to know that something is happening and I don't have to keep swapping applications all day!

Wow Paul, you sure know how to pick 'em!

That's got to be the most time-consuming and often frustrating kind of video to make!

I see what you're after, but In my opinion, it's outside the scope of Edius. So swap on! (for now)

Definitely worth a Feature Request though.

Well, someones gotta do it! The results are amazingly good, but I can see how a small modification to the Edius time remap would turn it into a great syncing tool - imagine you hit the keyframe button at a sound cue, and you get 2 keyframes, one representing the timeline position or audio, and the other the position on the video clip. The 2 keyframes are "tied" therefore moving the clip keyframe to a visual event would pull this event into line with the audio event, pulling it into sync. Edius would then vary speed the vision so that the "tie" point are always in sync.

This works in After Effects, but its a pain to play the music as realtime is not exactly where its at - just very fiddly.

Divide your main AVI into shorter clips (max) 1 to 2 minutes, use seperate audio & video tracks, always play with the video speed, not the audio.

This is how I have been doing it for years (with speed control) of course time remap is better, but at the moment works worse, give it some time for the "baby" to grow ...........

          Hey Paul,

The solution for you is Twistor:
Intelligently slow down or speed up your image sequences with visually stunning results.

No way with Edius. In rest best editing software for me.

            Twixtor will work.
I do this in Avid-Liquid and it does exactly as you wish with the keyframes. So it can be done from an NLE.
I never use the remap version from Edius, as it is very low on features and you are faster by just splitting your clips.

The TimeRemap in Lquid does speed and slow footage between keyframes and not just jump-speed at the keyframe like Edius.

Thankx for the replies, I'll check out Twixtor, which I reckon plugs in to PPRO CS3 which I have lying around somewhere, might make use of ye olde Adobe edit soft yet!

Well I tried Twixtor, but I have to say the "non realtime" of the plugin in PProcs3 causes the visual to update so slowly as to make it almost impossible to use - this on a system with dual 3.4 xeons!

After Effects is in fact more fluid, but still difficult to use because you need to "play" and review your work constantly, picking and slipping keyframes "to the beat" pretty tricky with stuttering playback.

The Edius solution would be so cool, as you can loop-play the clip in realtime, and would be able to shift keyframes to tweak the sync.

I may be mistaken, but the remap utility would just need the clip to be able to extend or retract in length depending on the speeds applied to the keyframes and it would work, maybe add a default 100% speed keyframe button.

I've requested this in the Features section.

I guess your xeon cpu´s are P4 versions, in that case the centrino
structure may be 2 or in some cases 3 times as powerfull.
I change my 2.8P4 with a E6850, and I had never imagine the difference.

I will try the demo and see how it runs in AEcs3 on the e6850.

If Time Remap allowed for shortening/lengthening of the clip (which has already been requested), splitting the audio off of the video would allow you to set "I want this frame of video to appear at this point in the timeline (which would correspond to the audio frame)" so if/when Time Remap can change the clip's duration, then it'd work. So would doing things the opposite way too ("stretch/shrink" audio to video).

Brandon, I think this is absolutely right - it would surely be quite a simple modification - I'm currently doing this with splitting the video track, changing the speed to make the sync points match, then doing the next one and so on.

As the speed changes are relatively small, between 85% and 110% the need for smooth changes hasn't really arisen, it looks good in HD.

I've also tried this with remap in PPROCS3, but the control is far too "course". Edius would appear to have exactly the right environment to implement this - accurate speed changes and realtime playback being the most important.

If you check out the "Twixtor" site, there is a clip to show you what it can do with blending and "eased" keframes added -
