I shot a friends wedding yesterday at the rehersal dinner the family found out my camera will shoot HD. They really pushed me to shoot HD now I got 3 hours of HDV. What is my workflow here? I dont have a blue-ray burner yet so I was going to capture all the footage convert it over to Canopus HQ then after the edit encode it to a Blue-Ray file AND a Mpeg-2 SD. Give them regualr DVDs now then Blue-Ray when it I go that way. Is that right? Also Is there anythting need to worry about in editing? I have the Editors tool kit will it work? I use Xplode, Imanginate, TM etc.

Capture to HQ, edit in an HDV preset and export using PCE or PC3 first to an Sd compliant 16:9 mpeg then to a blue ray compatible file. In Imaginate export to a 1440 HQ file(be sure and select upper fields).You can use an .ivp in the project but it is very tough on the machine so I just render it out of IM2. Xplode will depend on which ones you use...the ones that are native to Edius work in HD but the ones in Xplode Pro do not work in HD(some of them do and they are the same ones native to Edius). TM works fine in HD res and toolkit I don't know about other than if they are in HD res no problem. My guess is they will still look fine even if you have to use layout to scale them.

You said to export to a Blu Ray compatible file. What make it BR compatible. I have been exporting my projects back to m2t files, archiving to tape and then saving those m2Ts to an external drive for later authoring. I figured I could always convert from that to what ever I need.

What is the right format.

Ideally you would not convert HQ back to m2t and then later to Blu-ray Mpeg. If you dont have a way to store the HQ files than you probably have no choice.

I fugure i'll store the BR mpeg file on a portable drive then put in on the shelf. How mych can you put on a BR disc? This wedding is a monster I have close to 5 hours of footage which i'll cut down to about 3.

If you want 3 hours of good quality Mpeg 2 it will need to be done on a dual layet BD- which is not happening now, so H264 (the Adobe variety) is the only answer at the moment. I haven't pushed the time/quality issue but I believe @ average bitrate of 30000kbps you get just under 2 1/2 hrs on single layer.

2 1/2 hours of good quality, 3 hours of not so good.

Why not just back up the Canopus HQ format file instead of converting it to MPEG-2, and then backup the MPEG-2? Canopus HQ is higher quality than MPEG-2 anyway.

maybe im mising something in the workflow, my plan is was to edit the peoject in Canopus HQ then export the timeline to blue-ray (keep that file somewhere) then export the project to standard Mpeg-2 to make the DVD. So when things do go HD all I have to do is author the blue-ray file.

Yes- keep the timeline in Canopus HQ format. It will be better in quality than encoded MPEG-2. You have a Blue-Ray writer? Lucky you. I have to make do with normal DVD first - split the timeline into 4.5GB blocks to be able to fit into a standard DVD.

If you want to see what file format looks like, go to the 'sticky' on the Procoder forum about bluray presets. This will give you settings for BD authoring.

o.k. im confused I capture using Edius from my GY-HD100 into what I thought was native HDV about 3 hours of video used 150 gigs. then I used PC 3 to convert it to Canopus HQ and it was the same file size. Did Edius capture straight into Canopus HQ?

it depends what you set in capture input settings, if you set CanopusHQ, then it captures direct to HQ and you don't need to convert after

CanopusHQ has an avi extension

native HDV has an m2t extension
