I obviously need to run this a 50p project, the results are much better - however Ppro is still a whole lot better with an interlaced project than Edius when it comes to native scaling - so what does Adobe use that Edius does not?

    started a topic Edius Scaling.

    Edius Scaling.

I just thought I'd revisit this thorny old problem.

Having occasion to zoom in on a clip to hide some onlookers, I set about tweaking in Edius Layouter. The source material was 50p HD and looked pretty respectable on my 42 inch Samsung.

Expecting too much, I discovered it was necessary to zoom in by 120% and found the results to be less than acceptable - not surprising I hear you all muttering.

Testing various interpolation methods in Layouter continued to produce unacceptable results. OK then, time to dump the shot.

I dropped the footage into a 4K project in AE, applied an "Instant 4K" plugin from Red Giant and rendered out the clip, pulled this back into Edius on my existing HD project timeline, applied Layouter 75% (now a UHD clip) and Hey Presto! much improved and useable.

Undaunted, I thought of another approach to test. The footage went into a PPro CC15 project, I zoomed in using the basic clip tools and rendered out to a Canopus lossless file - the difference here, is that the project was HD and so was the output file, no 4K interim jump.

The results were even cleaner, and completely acceptable, adding a tiny bit of sharpening was even possible, without creating too many artefacts.

So the moral of this merry tale? how come Edius appears to produce poorer scaling results using Layouter than the competition, and I'm talking big differences in quality.

Should I be using Transform perhaps? I must try that out...

    Paul :-)

Oh, just to add, this is exactly the same in 7.5 and 8.3.

more wine! nurse! bring me the bedpan.
