      OK, I'm really flumox'd.

The suggestion to move the stills to a V only track worked. OK, that's great - thanks to all (although I'm almost certain this was not the behavior in E7 - but I guess that changed).

      But another problem popped up:
After I got back in my project my stills (jpg's) are showing upside down in the preview window!
      Say what?
The video clips are all OK, but all the jpegs are now inverted when placed in the preview window and when transferred to the timleine - they show correct the preview icons. Video clips are fine.

So, I closed E8 without saving, and after restart - same thing!
      - stills show correct in preview icons (as do video clips)
      - still are INVERTED when placed in preview window (video OK)
      - stills are INVERTED when placed on timeline (video clips OK)
      - stills already on timeline remain correct.

Anyone any ideas? I'm about ready to try a re-install. This is crazy.
Please tell me this is a setting I somehow messed up?!

      Thanks for any help.

is Quicktime installed and are you using Quicktime as the still importer? system settings/importer exporter/quicktime

can you make such a still available?

          Thank you for the help.
Yes, quicktime is enabled for import (I needed it to import some .mov files).

Example attached. Not a good pic, but it's from the batch that is now displaying upside down in preview & timeline.
Again, yesterday they were NOT displaying upside down..

Update: I turned off quicktime import, it made no difference on the pics that are now rotated.

But then I tried importing some scans and pics from other cameras. These both went to preview and TL in normal orientation!

So, E8 only rotates pics from this one camera today when it didn't yesterday? Is it possible to apply rotate based on camera somewhere, somehow?

            Any suggestions?
            Thanks

I tested your image and it appears normal

in your case, I would apply the mirror filter and choose vertical and or horizontal

Thanks for testing it in your system and verifying it's normal there.

Clearly my system is doing something very odd.
I realize I can fix this in the timeline with mirror etc., but I'd rather fix my system. This would be better, and much, much faster handling of jpegs in the future.

My system somehow changed from one day to the next in a very odd way.
                Anyone seen this?

Thanks for your suggestion Anton, but it made no difference.

Thanks to everyone who's trying to help.
I'm going to start a new post as the subject/problem has changed since I started this thread and it should make more sense. Thanks again to folks.
