when transitions fail

Here's a curly one... I've rang a couple of fellow Edius users and support in Australia on this and can't find a solution.


Problem:
Trying to drop a video transition on 2 overlaping video clips in a video track and the transition refuses to apply.

To be more specific, I pick up the disolve transition [or any transition] and whilst holding down the left mouse button [LMB] over the 2 overlapping clips, the transition greys out the tail of the first clip and the top of the second clip [indicating I'm on target and it's going to work] but releasing the LMB forces just the transparency level in the top or tail of one of the clips to change, thus I get the first clip going from 0% transparency to 100% transparency then the second clip cuts in.

Points to note:

1 .In application settings, extend clips when applying transitions is OFF

2. this is a multi sequence project and I have no problem like this in the other sequences

3. I was happily working in this sequence and applying trans to clips for hours before I finally hit this brick wall.

4. When trying to apply the transition dialogue appears in the dialogue field in the bottom of the timeline that says:
"The data necessary to complete this operation is not yet available"... WTF?? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone 8-)

5. I've also tried selecting the 2 clips video channel and hitting the default transition hot key {[CTRL] P} but to no avail 8-(


My Temporary solution.....Making a NEW sequence and copying all the clips from this seq into the NEW seq, I can happily apply transitions... no worries. This is my ONLY work around so far.

Maybe the problem is painfully obviuos to someone out there but I'm baffled.

Is this a bug?

Does/has anyone else experienced this?

Am I going crazy [err on second thoughts ignore that question.. I've been editing too long, I know I'm crazy already 8-) ]

Any solutions?

If you trim each of the clips a bit will it apply then? Just trying to figure out what is triggering this. Also, I assume you have checked at frame level and there is no gap. Is sync ir ripple modes on or off.

At the risk of exposing my ignorance, I've got to ask for a clarification. You refer to "2 overlapping video clips in a video track." This makes no sense to me since in my experience with EDIUS clips on a video track do not overlap. They may be seperated or may butt, but they don't overlap. If you want to overlap clips you put them on separate tracks. Can you explain to me this overlap condition on a single track?

What Pat said - check the Ripple and Sync settings. This has a direct effect on applying same-track transitions (they wind up on the mix track instead).

Clips already trimmed. Sync mode was ON but, i just tried it with sync mode off and it now works fine. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence but I can't believe how simple the remedy was. I thought i tried this already but can't be sure.

I really don't understand when you should have sync mode on vs when it should be off. Whilst I couldn't apply a transition in this seq with sync on i can do it in another seuence with sync on, why? Note, both seq have ripple mode ON.

Why is it neccesary to switch off sync mode? will this mean everything to the right will now be out of sync equal to the transition length used?

apologies, overlapping was not the correct term i guess. i meant the clips are buted up next to each other with trim.

with sync mode on, all clips on all tracks to the right of the transition will move along with any transition adding/adjustment, so all clips on all tracks must have room to move

with sync mode off, only the current tracks clips move

Thanks Anton. I guess that makes sence but i still don't understand why i need to turn sunc off in one sequence and not in another in order to place a transition?
