Position of transition

I know this is awfully basic but...

When I add a transition between two clips, instead of the middle of the transition lining up between the two clips, the END of the transition lines up between the two clips. The whole transition therefore falls within the front clip while I was expecting it to fall equally in both clips.

Would appreciate advice please.
