  • Importing RGB+Alpha clip from AE into Edius clack outlines

So I built a motion title in After Effects and I import it into Edius - drop the clip in the timeline and there is a black edge on the graphic. The areas where there is a blur it is VERY noticeable. Is there a setting I need to adjust or will edius not allow you to import clean RGB+Alpha files? I exported the clips in AE as HQX files. Anyone know about this?

    Thanks,
    Mat Cain

I've never had an issue with HQX alpha files from AE.

You export alpha channel and you don't get a fine black edge on everything? You don't get darkness behind the transparent portions of things you build in AE?

I just did this with AE. The top clip is a keyed alpha and the bottom clip is a white matte.

You have to decide if the size difference is worth the little bit of color punch. A 21,09 second clip with HQX came in at 228mb.
The same clip in uncompressed came it at 3.96GB.
There is not doubt that uncompressed will produce a better product. It comes down to drive space and the difference of the image.
You have to be realistic about your circumstances.
As far as the edges, I don't see a bit of difference.

Jerry - I can see the dark areas particularly around her hair - that is precisely what I am talking about.

You're seeing something that I'm not. If you're talking about the spaces where there is frizzy hair then that is the actual key quality(my fault) and not the alpha export quality.
            Here's another shot of that.

I tried it and it did the same thing but as an uncompressed file it kills my timeline playback. I am beginning to wonder if there is an issue with the way that Edius handles alpha channel

I think I solved the problem - or worked around it. first let me show you what I am talking about Jerry -
                Untitled-1.png
In this image you can see a green curser that is wiping on a title for an on-screen speaker. When I import the uncompressed RGB+A file it leaves a fine black edge around the graphic and the motion blur on the curser leaves a black blob while the curser is in motion. The transparent areas are also darker than the original graphic.

                My fix -
I exported the graphic as a PNG sequence and imported the sequence in. The graphic now looks the way that it was built in AE.
                Untitled-2.png

I appreciate all the help and I am not always the sharpest tool in the shed - so its very possible I am missing something (which is why I came to you guys). I would definitly like to understand why I can't use a HQX file. I would prefer to do that - or some other video file type. The png sequence seems messy but doable. So if anyone can help me understand or tell me how to do it right please let me know.

                Thank you Jerry and others.

What type of matte are you using? Straight or Premultiplied. I'm using Straight. Uncompressed is RT here.

This is a clean alpha. Look at the fine strands of hair. There is also the blur from the depth of field.
The video is all hair motion.

Jerry - As I mentioned, I am not always the sharpest tool in the shed. I was using premultiplied. That was the default and I don't know the difference between the two. So because you asked I re-rendered as HQX RGB+A but selected "straight" and that fixed the problem. So there it is. Thank you very much! do you know the difference between the straight and premultiplied? if so I would love to know.

Thank you very much - I am so glad I don't have to use the PNG solution.
