  • Cutting and Cutting Backwards on the Timeline

This question pertains to cutting on the timeline. I'm wondering if there is a way to create a preset or a button to automatically cut on the timeline and then cut backwards to a desired duration.

As I view video on the timeline looking for those perfect shoots I would like to make a cut and then press a button that would cut backwards to my desired preset duration.

I don't think there is a button for this. You can still do this pretty fast, though. Depends on how fast your fingers are.
    1. Make a cut on the timeline.
    2. Use NumPad:
    - and hit "+" or "-" to determine if you want to go forth or back.
    - enter the number of frames you want to go forth or back. Edius will converte frames and seconds in a pretty logical way. Then hit "enter".

    - go 15 frames back by hitting - | 1 | 5 | Enter
    - go 3 seconds back by hitting - | 7 | 5 | Enter OR - | 3 | 0 | 0 | Enter (in PAL countries with 25fps)
    3. Make a cut at the new position.

If you use those NumPad entries often, you can get used to it very well and be pretty fast. Additionally, you can enter any numbers to move the cursor forth or back a specific amount to time. With a one-button-solution, you would only have one specific duration and would need to change it in the settings every time.

Your suggestion seems to work occasionally but I keep getting inconsistent number values even though I'm using the same entry number consistently. I test each segment with the duration button. At this time I want to achieve 3 second segments and these are the numbers I keep getting back. 3;00 - 2;29 - 2;28 - 2;27 - 3;01. I tried using the Esc and Save buttons after every finish cut but that doesn't seem to work either. Since I'm working with video walls I need consistent sized segments.

Not sure if there is a fix for this and if there is maybe someone else will chime in. I hope there is a fix for this because the method that you're suggesting works a lot faster than my previous one.

      Thank you!!

Hm... just to make sure: you should clearly avoid to click into the timeline after you did the num block entry. When the cursor has jumped back to the desired position, you should rather hit another hot key, such as "c" for making a simple cut or "n" for making a cut and deleting the first part of the clip. As soon as you click into the timeline, you might not hit the exact frame, and therefore unintentionally re-define the cursor's position by one or more frames.

Stating this, I must admit that my Edius 8.2 WG behaves a little buggy, which prevents me from doing what I advised you above:
after hitting "enter" the little cursor would still blink and not finish the data entry. Therefore, the timeline would not be set active again which results in the fact that I cannot give the commands "c" or "n"...

Hello Capt. I carefully read and broke down your last reply to me and it is exactly what I have been doing. So in other words, I make a cut and then enter in + 300 ENTER and then hit the C key. I then check the duration and notice that it gives me the right value about three times in a row but usually the fourth one is a different value.

My version is 7.51.55 maybe it's just a little bit buggy.

Do you know if there is a hotkey for highlighting the timeline?

          Thank you

you enter the timecode value into the player and then press escape key on keyboard (Escape the timecode edit mode)

Yes that's what I'm doing but it does nothing at all. Funny because you and I have the same Edius version. Just to be exact my Edius version is 7.51.55

                      This is what I'm doing.
                      1. Making a cut on the timeline.
                      2. Tap once on the + key in the numeric side of the keyboard.
                      3. Add the number value which in my case is 300 for 3 seconds.
                      4. Tap the Esc key once.
When I do the above nothing happens. Before I replaced line item number 4 with the enter key. When I use the enter key it would give me 3 seconds plus or minus.

Since you are in North America, are you using 59.94 drop frame timecode? If you are, are you allowing for the 2 frames that are skipped in the timecode count every time you cross a minute mark? This will cause the duration of your move to be off by 2 frames when you cross the minute marks with the exception of the 10 minute marks.

Other than that, my numeric movement using enter works perfectly. I can't say I ever noticed a problem when I was on Edius 7.51 either.

300 for 3 seconds? are you shooting 100 frames per second?

I actually don't enter a value, I click the seconds or frames and roll mouse as in attached example -2 sec and I press Escape followed by C to cut or N for trim cut or Alt+N for trim cut and close gap

Entering 300 translates into 3 seconds and 00 frames. Standard with most nle systems that accept direct timecode entry.

                              sorry, yes, 3sec 00 frames, 300

my mind was on frames, so 3 sec would be 75 when frame rate is 25
