  • Setting multiple edit points in the play / record window

Is it possible to set multiple in/out points in the same clip instead of just a single in/out point before dropping the clip to the timeline.

Explanation: Let's say that I have a 20 min. interview in the play/record monitor and I'd to select between 3-5 clips to be put into the timeline. Is there a way that I can select the in/out points of all the clips at one time or do I have to continue to :

    (1) select edit points

    (2) put the clip in the timeline

    (3) go to the next edit point and continue this process for clip after clip after clip

In the old tape days the process that I am talking about was called " batch capture " but I am not sure if this can be done in non linear editing.

You cannot have multiple In and Out points in the Player. A simple Mark In and Out and then hit the Insert or Overwrite button. Repeat as necessary.

If you have to do this a lot you may want to investigate Continuous Recording with the Canon C100.
Pressing REC marks I/O in camera while recording continuously.

Edius is the only NLE that interprets the camera data and creates adjustable cut clips.

I would forget the player and add clip to timeline, then cut up all along with C and Alt+N

make cut with C at end of first good take, move playhead to start of next required take and press Alt+N (closes gap automatically)

place playhead to end of take and press C

        repeat above steps

Indeed a very fast work flow like mentioned above !
Can't remember when it was the last time I used the play monitor to select in and outs.......

Maybe when it can display wave form for the audio I might change my work flow again :)

It totally depends on your worflow. Using the Player is a must for broadcast news.

I work in a similar method. I place the full video segment on the timeline, mark an in and out around the area I don't want and use CTRL-D, which I have set to ripple delete between in and out. That way, if I have items on other tracks that I also need to ripple I can, or I can protect/lock tracks I don't want to ripple and let everything else ripple.

I find this useful, as I am often going back to the beginning of the timeline to cut an intro to music, after I have finished later sections of the timeline, so I can ripple the later parts of the timeline back, but protect the intro music tracks from getting cut up.

Most training materials and instruction teach that you should load into the preview window, mark in and out, and then place that on the timeline, and that is still good if your project is made of many smaller single takes of scenes or setups, but when you have longer pieces of video that you have to keep taking pieces from, I always found it faster and easier to cut the unwanted material from the timeline than to try to find and assemble the wanted material.

When you cut pieces of a interview it will greatly enhance the workflow speed if you have a visual including a simplified (maybe outline only) of the sound that comes with it.

I understand the need for the player to do inserts and last minute tweaking before going on air.
I'm sure that often the inserts need to be retweaked on the timeline because they are not spot on when cut in the player window.

I believe the wave display (in whatever form) in the player window has been requested since several years back.
There's no denying it would be a positive addition to the edit experience......

Furthermore the player plays out the sound 'as recorded'
This of course is fine but when a interview as example is way too soft and your timeline 'volume' which is set at a comfortable listening level doesn't match up (yet) as the audio is not tweaked yet, you have to spend more time cutting it together due to low volume monitoring problem.
I have also been thrown of more than a few times with pretty loud volumes coming from the player as, especially in live events (debates) recorded volume's levels can be 'hot' at times......

In an all perfect studio world when there is always sufficient compression and limiting used while recording you don't have these issues much.
As we live in a imperfect world in live events and run and gun shooting a wave display would greatly benefit the player usage......
