  • NTSC vs PAL settings in EDIUS

Think I might have made a boo boo!

Just finished editing a very small wedding, that I shot in PAL. Went to merge a generic PAL intro, which didn't work because as I discovered, I had set project settings as NTSC when I named the epj.

So, according to EDIUS, I've edited PAL footage (DV 4:3) in an NTSC (DV 4:3) project environment. Didn't think it was possible, but ho hum.

I've set PCoder to export to a PAL AVI (and I'll add the PAL intro later), but the rendering time is much more than it should be - on a par with time it would normally take to convert between formats. I did use many more filters than usual - so it might just be that.

Can anyone shed any light on what Pcoder is going to do to the finished project?

    Any help much appreciated!!

Just aborted the conversion to have a look, and it look converted - all fuzzy - but still PAL.

    Oh woe!

How do I rectify this - short of reediting the whole **** thing and then killing myself in a frenzy of embarrassment and anger??

Can I start a new project, but reference all the previous projects' edit points and filters and so on to the same footage?

That'd be a good thing, but only useful for idiots like me. Probably.

OK what I am doing is running the project out to a PAL camera, and then am going to capture it back in a PAL project and re render from there.

        Hopefully that should work.

        Hello?

Wow! D'you hear that echo? Tumbleweeds too!

You already answered yourself - it's a rebuild job.

I just didn't want to deliver the bad news..

This subject has been raised many times in the forum.
It is very Important to choose the correct project preset. I think in 4.5 it has become easier because you can create your own give them a name and even put a picture if you want
That is if you don't like reading the preset you can look at a picture. he he

Something like this might help in the future

Can you make an EDL list of the current NTSC project and then import to the PAL project? Might only see cuts and dissolves, but better than nothing.

No, EDIUS will complain of a differing frame rate, and prevent import.

That said, it might be possible to import into a different NLE, convert it, and send out an EDL from that NLE with the correct timebase for EDIUS to use. Don't know if that's possible, but it's something worth investigating.

Actually, if you change the export to CMX EDL, it will import into PAL. But, CMX is very basic. There are problems using linear EDLs for NLEs.

Many moons ago, I used to use Word and type in my own EDL's. I'd take the floppy with me to the editing session, which in turn, was loaded to the Convergence editing system. I still have a Convergence 95+ hanging on the wall.

                      Thanks for the answers guys.

Yes I rather figured its a rebuild. Darn.

I tried capturing it onto a DV tape in a PAL camera. It recorded fine, but the recording would not import into a PAL project, behaving as if the footage was NTSC. I guess its to do with other settings.

tried CMX EDL export. Get same error msg as other formats.

Better bite the bullet and settle down to it.

Very annoying because I'm usually very careful with the proj settings as I do have to switch them around a lot.

                      Thanks for the help!
