  • First prod on Edius 8

My first project on Edius 8. Here's the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7Go49uUhvU

The opening sequence is JPGs with transform effects. The underwater footage is GroPro at 3K with YUV Curve. Other video footage is Sony DSR PD170. My computer is 5 years old and it sputters a bit on transitions. I guess I need a new motherboard. After dealing with the quirks of Edius 8 and Windows 10, I'm pleased with the end product.

Go here and look at these filters for your GoPro.

A Red filter is essential for Carribean underwater vidography.

Jerry, for the snorkeling depth he's at, I'd be concerned about having to clean up excessive magenta cast in the water, even using just the snorkel filter. Anything 5 feet or so deeper, then snorkeling red filter, certainly. But, I'd be leary of it here.

And they are only $ 50.00, Or can I get the filters somewhere else? I wonder if a good light would offset some of the blue. I would have tried it but I was dealing with bronchitis not a god idea to go diving. Hopefully next year.

You can remove the red easier than you can add it. Plus, the filters can be removed at shallower depths. He did have bottom shots in that sequence.
The filter also cleans up the image a bit.

Lots of different ones on Amazon. I don't know if they're good or not, but lots of choices.

One thing for sure, after seeing that video- both in and out of water- Cuba is definitely on my list of places I'd like to go!!

The type of lighting needed will depend on the max depth.
The amount of 'throw' needed for daytime effectiveness would be a pain. As you go deeper the lights would become more effective.

Jerry, where it gets really dicey is when you've got parts of the clip showing both coral as well as backround water. In those cases, some pretty heavy masking and color corrections can be required to correct the water while maintaining the color in the corals, etc.
In the Bahamas project I did last summer, I spent alot of time making tracking masks to correct the water while maintaining the color in shipwrecks that I was swimming around. It was quite labor intensive.

Theo, keep at it. It's a whole lot of fun! The more you do, the more you'll like it.

The filter is the easiest way with a go pro.

I never spent that much time in post with masking underwater footage.. Just white balance each shot and that will take care of the coral and water differences at each shot's particular depth.

I'm talking about using an underwater white balance card and not the camera's on board auto white balance.

I didn't mean for this to take over the OP's thread.

Regarding Gopros and WB, the best workflow for underwater is to use Protune mode with WB set on RAW.

How many users are going to do that? The average user will remember a filter over having to set items in a menu.

Jerry, I'm referring to using that setting in addition to a red filter, in deeper applications. But, you're right, I'm sure that most average users won't use that setting. However, those who are serious about this and who have the ability, and plan to edit, should strongly consider it. Of course, for me when shooting underwater 3D, it is absolutely essential to eliminate any WB disparities between the 2 cameras.

We could make an appointment first week in February 2017. Jerry don't worry about taking over the tread I enjoy learning different tricks and how to manipulate colors in Edius. I will keep on playing with the footage for a wile.
I even tried to do a pan with two photos using transform, bit of a challenge but it works. If only I could see the JPGs at the same time. I believe we are of topic but at least we are not complaining about Edius. Thanks again.
