If the DVD is anamorphic widescreen, the clips should come in properly flagged at 16:9.

If not, try Restream to fix the flags.

    Hi Mr Sparkle,

Thanks for your answer, it seems to work.
I'm still testing it because I need to go trough my friend and as I'm in the Philippines and he's in Switzerland, it makes it a bit difficult.
It looks that to import the footage with DISCcapture I need to format the DVD in VIDEO mode and finalize it before being able to import. The problem then is that when I import the files to Edius, it doesn't recognize the 16/9 format and I have to manually change every footage, is there a batch process to do it in many files at the same time?

If the DVD is formated in VR mode, I can import the files with DISCcapture but the files are still shorter when imported to Edius.

I got a note back from Japan - while they look at this, they've suggested some things:

    1. If you use DISCcapture to import the footage, go into the settings and check "Re-construct files when capturing DVD Video"

    2. You've already chosen the "Don't use PTS" option - also check the "Get timecode from GOP header" option in the "MPEG Importer" dialog box of "Plug-in Settings"

I was unable to download your file for testing, it said something like:

Such file does not exist or it has been removed for infringement of copyrights

Please Anton read the thread before posting!!
If you want to tell the world that MiniDV camera are better than DVD camera I have nothing against it but it's not the place for it!!
I've been in many forums about editing DVD files and I'm really tired of those persons not answering the question at all, just saying "change your camera, buy MiniDV". THIS IS NOT THE SUBJECT !!!!!
    The question is:
Why files from DCR-DVD908E are shorter than the original when imported to Edius (and in Edius only, they're fine in Premiere, Vegas) but the ones from DCR-DVD803E worked perfectly?
    Thanks for any constructive answers...

IF you want to edit from DVD camcorders then Womble is a better solution than the more pro NLE's. It will only re-render those sections that are changed. If you want to do fancy effects that change all the video, even of course colour correct, then moving to a DV or HDV tape based system is far better as Anton has suggested. Having said that my daughter is very happy with her DVD cam and likes the convenience of just putting the disc in the player and watching!!! Even use Nero to make a full sized disc copy. I have used Womble a few times to make a compilation for her but I think in general making a copy and then editing "in camera" has the advantage of maintaining the menuing and time/date/info displays etc of the original video.

sorry, but Edius is not a home video DVD camera editing software

DVD of any kind is not really designed to be edited

DVD file format is too compressed to be suitable for proper editing

shops that sell DVD cameras should warn buyers that it is not a camera suitable for editing the footage

see if you can trade it in for a MiniDV camera, it produces 3 x higher quality and it is perfect for editing without losing quality
