Handbrake does highly optimized encodings. Bitrate allocation works a way better here on two-pass encodings to get best quality possible. Edius exports are one-pass only so bitrate allocation is a just matter of estimating about motion in video and bitrate needed.

Just curious but how improved is Handbrake over an MP4 export direct from Edius?Leave a comment:

Personally I prefer the HQX route over the MPEG2 route that Anton uses. It does take longer, but the HQX codec is a much higher quality starting point than the MPEG2 route Anton uses.
Of course the project does sort of dictate the acceptable workflow. In my day job, I work in high end film, where anything less in quality than ProRes 422HQ is not really acceptable, so that is what I lean toward the HQX route, as it is capable of similar quality to ProRes422HQ.
I do use Edius at home for event videography work, where like Anton time vs. money is more relevent, so an MPEG2 route for my event work would be acceptable, but I still tend to do the HQX master as a starting point.
The MPEG2 route I would consider more of a "broadcast quality" starting point, which is essentially the bottom of the barrel in my daytime work.Last edited by BernH; 05-06-2019, 03:17 AM.Leave a comment:

Anton & Bern - thanks for the valuable info. Obviously, the way to go.
Happy May....

Handbrake then processes this file at a speed of 225 frames a second to mp4 HD
if I feed it HQX, the encoding speed will be way slower
I shoot lots of full day government conferences with about 8 speakers at 40min each, so speed of export after editing is important
the end result goes on their intranet and quality is great as far as I seeLeave a comment:

Hey Alan, as Anton said, handbrake can take HQX, so export an HQX quicktime or AVI and hanbrake should chew on that nicely.Leave a comment:

Hi Anton,
Just HD MP4. And I'm loaded with 9.2 only. Not sure what file to output the EDIUS timeline to in order to get it over to Handbrake.
Thanks - have a good weekend in Aussie!

Handbrake accepts GV HQX and Prores once you have 9.4Last edited by GrassValley_PS; 05-01-2019, 11:47 PM.Leave a comment:

Guys - have never used Handbrake. How to you get the EDIUS timeline to Handbrake to go to MP4 for better quality than EDIUS 9.4?

Hey, thanks for asking, mostly overall quality, details and also a little colors, as far as I remember, I moved to Premiere long time ago, I loved Edius for its simple UI, but unfortunately it was far behind...
Forget about HDR, just take a short FHD movie with your DSLR and import, mark, export, compare!
Settings? Select anything you want!
Note than I didn't test Edius 8 or 9, don't know if it's better now?!Leave a comment:

We are at version 9.4 now!
HDR is implemented. I remember in an issue on Panasonic H264 files (color space 16-255 or was ist 0-235?) where values got a cut-off.
Other issues are unknown, my exports are always Jeep the color space. I have no clue what has turned your workflow into issues.

Looking at the original post I would have to say in what way is the quality reduced? Is it colour, details, artifacts? What are the project settings, video formats etc? It could be something to do with HDR, but could just be wrong settings but without knowing exactly what the problem is we can't properly judge can we?Leave a comment:

To take a very pragmatic view - what does the paying customer want us to deliver?
How long will it take to ramp-up to HDR (or what ever is next) once the paying customers create a demand for that format.Leave a comment:
