  • Slow Rendering with HP z600

    Hello,

I just got a HP Z600 workstation with dual E5640 XEON , 8GB RAM, and Quadro FX 580 GPU. I also got a storm mobile card. Rendering of a 1 hour video takes like 3-4 hours. Other than Edius the workstation is pretty fast with everything else. Any ideas?

    Thank you in advance,
    Valantis

You don't say which version of Edius you are using, but the E5640 CPU's are from 2010, so quite old. Looking around at some of the benchmark testing 1 E5640 appears to have less than half the power of 1 Skylake 6700K, so even though you have 2 of them they are less powerful than a single modern Skylake CPU and don't have the advantage of Quicksync when exporting out to h264

Hello and thank you for your reply,

      I use Edius 6.0.3
I do understand that those specific processors are from 2010 but is it normal that it takes up to 4 hours to render a 1 hour video?

Conversion to i.e. to MP4 will take that long (without quick sync)
Exporting to i.e. to Mpeg2 should be very fast (multiple times realtime)

Then again this is only a guess as you never mentioned the type of your native footage, project settings and export format :)

1366 socket chips were really good, in their day. I have a 980X chip and it works great. However, compared to my 4790k it is extremely slow. Except with MPEG2. H.264 is brutal. A 2 hour project could take over night to encode. My chip is running at 3.73 GHz, and not 2.6GHz.
I don't know what you paid for the system, but you could have probably gotten a new Z170 based system for just a bit more.
