That thing is awesome! Matrix switchers are the best because they make things so flexible. I have an 8x4 component video matrix switcher for my AV setup.

And to stay on topic... I forsee no problem using it with EDIUS.

I've used one of these for the last 3 years, really cuts down on plugging and unplugging cameras drives etc.

Nice unit, but that's essentially a hub (FireWire is repeater-based technology, so all hubs are repeaters), which would mean that connecting multiple cameras would result in the computer "seeing" the traffic from all the cameras.

In order to avoid "confusion" on the computer-end, you want something that will disconnect the connection between the other devices so the computer will only "see" one DV device at any given time, hence the switch box.

I suppose if you're handy with electronics you could just build your own switch box. There's not much "tech" in it - since FireWire is hot-pluggable, it's essentially disconnecting and reconnecting sets of lines, much like the old-school serial port switch boxes with rotary switches did. Of course since it's a high-speed digital connection, you probably want to shield things well.

That's funny, it's the same one I found a few minutes ago. Thanks for the recommendation - I didn't think they made firewire switches!

FireWire hubs are like Ethernet hubs - all traffic goes to all ports.

What you really need is a FireWire switch box... Otherwise the device control commands you send are going to be received by all cameras, and the responses (and streams) from all cameras will come back. It has high potential to turn into a real mess, perhaps even worse than if you daisy-chained those devices together (which would also be problematic).

started a topic firewire hub and Edius NX

    firewire hub and Edius NX

I'm thinking about connecting a 3 port firewire hub to the NX breakout box and connecting a digital deck like the Sony GVD 900 and a Z1 to the other ports. Can anyone tell me if these firewire hubs work both ways, ie, the signal from NX will flow back across the hub to the "inputs"? This will save me from having to plug/unplug cables a lot. Thanks.
Working...
