Parallax effect

Hi all,

Is it possible to create a parallax effect using Photoshop for getting layered images and then using Edius for animating?

I haven't a AE license so I would like to use what I have without renouncing to quality.

For what I understood on the bazillion PS+AE tutorials, PS is used to get different layers and AE to animate them.
I was asking to myself if edius layouter it's the same thing.
It's incredible that googling parallax effect or 2.5d effect edius I get zero results... Months after months I feel like being in an Indian reserve with edius :(

Basically, yes. As far as I know, there are several techniques of deconstructing into layers, depending not only on the footage, but also on the result you want to reach.

Well, the Edius Layouter does nothing like Photoshop, but for some basic things can be used as a very basic alternative for AE. You can actually do much more than you would expect on the first sight.

In the following video (please ignore the cheap 3D animation) I did simple 2D-animation using the Layouter.

- from 0:13 to 0:22 (including a mask filter for the diagonal cropping)
- from 0:36 to 0:42 and other similar parts

Since basic 3D movements are implemented in the Layouter, you can do much more.

It heavily depends on:
- how efficient you need to be (those things are time-consuming, and a skilled AE operator would have done that in half of the time - and additionally the result might have been of a better quality).
- how creative you are in terms of using and even abusing several features in a way other people would never think of.

The Edius Layouter in combination with the Edius mask effect and a clever management of video track hierarchy/-blending are very powerful tools to reach simple, but still impressive AE-lookalike result without having even touched AE.

I am only talking about basics here. As soon as light, reflections, particles or camera movements are asked or production time/efficiency is crucial, you need to switch to compositing software like AE or Fusion.

If what you are wanting to do is similar to what David Clarke showed in the Vistitle example, yes, you should be able to accomplish the moves after deconstrucitng the image.

However, without a proper 3D compositing program, it will take a lot longer.
Have you looked at Hitfilm as an alternative to AE?

You use Photoshop to split the image into layers and then fill in the gaps.

The advantage of Vistitle/AE/Boris Red etc is that you can then move the layers in 3D relative to each other and then add a 3d camera. You then move the camera to produce the effect. Its a bit like sticking each photoshop layer onto a bit of card, arranging them on a desk and then moving a camera around them.

EDIUS' layouter does 3D movement but each track is in its own word, so you have to move each one and it is harder to get a decent looking movement.

HitFilm Express and Blackmagic Fusion should both do it and both are free, although I have not done the effect in either program. Express is the easier to understand if you are used to EDIUS.

Yes, I would like to create something like David Clarke example: I need to animate a couple of vintage photographs.
