I've been given some XVID 1440x1080 files in mp4 wrapper - no problem as PPro sorts them out, but Edius either crashes or shows green video with pixelation here and there - is this a known failing? any observations?

Not sure about how Edius decodes H263 (means XVID, DIVX).
I guess H263 in MP4 container is decoded by Quicktime while
H263 in an AVI container would be decoded by DirectShow codec.
Can you open the files in Quicktime & test if you get the same appearance?
