2160p files choke on playback from YouTube

Is there any reason why Edius has a problem with files from YouTube?

It is a 2160p clip from the Sony PXW-Z100 in Tokyo.

Using the YouTube Free downloader from http://youtubedownloader.com/ to download the file, Daum Pot Player plays it perfectly on the desktop but in Edius on system 4 it just chokes and won't play.

Pot Player seems to be using FFMPEG h264 to play the file and uses the GPU to play it back.

In Edius the CPU utilisation is only at 22% when trying to play so I think it is outside Edius's understanding, yet it is an MP4 H264 file.

The same thing happens using AEX filters I note it doesn't wind up the CPU on playback so a render is needed to play. Sapphire and ProDad use the GPU and they push that hard.

If you're just talking playback, I get a steady buffer climb all the way to 300.
This is on the 4790k. If I place a Sapphire filter on it, I have to do a buffer prefill to get it to play.
This file is an AVC ([email protected]) versus [email protected] which we normally see.
That same file will play in RT at FULL resolution with the Procamp filter applied using Premiere. Sapphire Chokes it as well.

It just won't play either on the previous dual 6 core Xeon Pc or this dual 16 core one. No filters applied. I wonder why your i7 is playing it and the dual Xeon PC's aren't? Is Edius using something in the i7 that isn't in the Xeon?

The main difference being the on board GPU in the i7. Because I see such low CPU activity while attempting to play that might well be the case its looking for something on the CPU which it finds on yours and doesn't know what to do on mine. Also I note from the ARK site the i7 has SSE4.1/4.2 & AVX2.0, my CPU just has AVX2.0 listed but Edius is not complaining there is any facility missing.

Other mp4's play OK here such as those direct from camera it is just these YouTube types I have problems with in Edius the desktop is quite happy to play it.

What do you think is (not) going on?

It might be the clock speed of 4.7GHz.

Yes as I have just looked up the X5650 the old dual CPU and that had SSE4.2 and that wouldn't play it either and AVX2.0 is supposed to be the next move on from SSE giving 2.8 times the performnce of SSE.

It was only recently I found out from other responses that Edius is more responsive to clock speed than cores which seems a rather unusual approach, but we are where we are that's how it works.

Of course because my CPU usage is low they are not going into turbo mode at 3.6Ghz so my clock speed will be alot lower at 2.3GHz.

I don't luckily need to use these files seriously they are just nice demos, and to play them I change them into HQX.

Beware, I very nearly installed this until I realised it's not Google software, the exe file's digital signature says Bonjoy Software, arg!

I downloaded the file using Internet Download Manager.
Put it onto a 4K 29,97P project and it played without a hitch
Same as Jerry - the buffer climbed steadily to 300

Ok Guys , this has gone far enough. If the video is not available as a direct download from youtube, what is proposed here is kind of illegal and needs to be discussed elsewhere. Thanks for understanding.
