Trim Mode

Hello,

I'm looking for a keyboard based method to extend duration of audio and video clips on my timeline similar to Avid's trim mode.

I'd like a precise frame by frame method where I could select an edit point and use my keyboard to extend or subtract length forward or backward.

Place your cursor where you want your trim and try Shift Alt M to extend to the right, and Shift Alt N to extend to the left.

BTW, I have done both ways and once you place your cursor, I think it is actually faster to grab the end of the clip and drag it. But I do realize that some people are set in their ways.

What version do you have.

I'm on 7.55.

That doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm brand new to the program so maybe I'll click around a little bit and see if I can figure out making your method work.

was the clip selected? also, place the playhead where the clip needs to be extended to, prior to using the shortcut

if the clip is already full stretched to its end (showing small triangle), it will not work

I never use the shortcut because stretching the clip by grabbing the edge with the mouse is way quicker

I came from Avid to EDIUS and I tried to follow my own advice (given to people migrating from Liquid to Avid a few years ago) - Don't try and impose your old workflows on your new NLE
I have found that trimming in EDIUS is far easier to perform than in Avid.
In fact I seldom if ever use the Trim Tool (F6)
I do my trimming directly on the timeline and I have accurate frame by frame control of all trim functions from my keyboard.

The trim tool is an extraneous item that should go bye bye along with the Title tracks IMHO.

Yep everything can be done right on the timeline.

In respect to the others and IMHO I do agree with Matthew Halla that the " keyboard shortcut trimming " in AVID is much quicker and accurate than " dragging " the ends of the clip.
Edius trimming might be good for movie / documentary editing , but for news editing which is always based on deadline and speed , again IMHO Edius trimming in the timeline is much faster and accurate.
