  • Possible Boris bug in 4.51c (4.52?)

    hello,

I have installed the demos of Boris Red, FX & Graffiti into 4.51c and have found that with all of them if you apply an effect to a clip all is okay, but if you move that clip once or twice depending on what and where the clip is on the timeline all settings within the Boris effect are lost. The effect is still on the clip, but when you open up the plugin it has been reset to 'zero'!

This only occures within my Edius 4.51C install and not within 4.24 on another PC.

Could anyone please confirm this bug with Boris plugins and 4.51C and/or if it occures with 4.52 as well?

    Thanks,
    Simon

Simon are you sure it only happens in 4.51
The Boris release notes have a lot to say about this
Go to Help in Boris and open the release notes and select the EDIUS section
Try this Set Edius to delete invalid render files
every time you move or change a file with a Boris Effect on the timeline deselect and then reselect the Boris effect in the Information Palet
and then re render, bit of a pain but this seems to be the way Boris now works

      Hi Barry,

Thanks for your reply. I may not have explained myself very well.

I am aware of what I think you're talking about. This is the need to unselect then reselect the particular Boris effect to get any settings changes to update on the timeline. Am I correct?

The problem I'm encountering in 4.51c is that if you move a clip on the timeline with a Boris effect applied, the effect remains on the clip but all the effect settings are returned to default. ie If you had a scale and rotate on a clip setup in Boris Fx 9.1 then shifted the clip left/right on the same track or moved it to another track entirely the settings in Boris FX would return to default - no scale no rotate. Sometimes this resetting back to default, including the removal of any additional tracks added within Boris, happens on the first move in other cases the second move. This seems to depend, without going into a large investigation at the moment, what type of media clip (video/still etc) the effect is applied and where in the surrounding edit the clip sits (on its own/between other clips etc).

Hopefully that makes more sense or not...

Yes that is correct, I will check your other bit (moving a clip) tonight and get back to you, I havn,t moved a clip yet but if you add an Edius filter on top or under the Boris clip the Boris settings are not rendered or even noticed only the Edius filter but the long render with Boris is still in effect.

          Hi Simon
Tried moving a clip with a Boris filter and yes I can duplicate what you are saying and this is also covered in the Boris release notes this is what happened.
Moved clip to another track or position on the time line - No problems - Boris filter still active but needed rendering.
Moved clip to another track above a clip or overlapping a clip with an Edius filter and the Boris filter was reset as you described.
One more thing if you add an EDIUS transition between a Boris clip and another with an EDIUS Keyer applied it also resets Boris
No I idea who's problem it is, probably Boris? There is a work around for this:
While in Boris save the project and if you need to go back just load it again, apply the filter and whamo you are back to where you were.
          Hope this helps
          Regards Barry

            Barry,

Do you mean to add an Edius filter(s) to the same clip that has the Boris filter attached? If so, I tried this and all filters seemed to render. I had a scale and a move applied with Boris FX 9, an Edius Old Movie filter 'on top' of and a Colour Wheel filter 'under' giving a scaled, rotating, old movie affected, black and white clip with the unfortunate 'non-alpha black border' around the clip.

            regards,
            Simon

              Barry,

I suspect that this may be a 'new' Edius problem as I can't reproduce it in Edius 4.24. But then again maybe Edius has changed in such a way as to make this the new standard behaviour for the two.

You are using FX, I am using RED and there seems to be a difference
In red if I add an Edius filter to the clip Boris is reset or if I overlap with a clip with an Edius filter Boris is reset till I remove the Edius Filter or shift the overlap.
Also if I overlap or add a transition between a clip with an Edius keyer Boris RED is reset permantly, if the clip before or after just has an Edius filter there is not a problem.
The save project in Boris at the moment seems to be the saviour.
                Regards Barry

                  Barry,

                  Thanks for your replies.

I quickly tried mixing a couple of Edius filters with a few different Boris Red 4 (trial version) filter settings on the same clip and had no problems with rendering - didn't try all the overlapping and transition situations you mentioned though, but expect to get similar results given recent experience.

I'm using SP hardware. I don't know if that makes any difference to your setup and mine with Boris. The Edius 4.24 system I have that doesn't seem to show this Boris 'reset' problem is running with an older RT2 Max card, so I don't know if that makes a difference either or it is the different versons of Edius.

Maybe if Anton Strauss reads this he may be able to add to it as I believe he uses SP hardware with Edius 4.03 and Boris products.

                  regards,
                  Simon

                      Thanks Anton and Barry,

Just as I suspected. I would call this a new 'bug' in Edius, I hope GV also agree. I know there are workarounds but...

This Boris resetting anomally appears to be rectified in 4.54 - intentionally or not. Well done GV. Can anyone else confirm this - Anton, Barry?
