  • MXF question

Now I am showing my total ignorance of file formats but here goes anyway.
A media trainer friend has been sent 6 MXF files- just mxf. They will not open. I only see MXF when they are on P2 cards (with all associated files) - stumped. media info offers no clues to me. MXF OP1a container. I had a vague feeling they might be AVID wrapped. Any words of wisdom? If they are Avid can I download a pack to open them. Could they be DNxHD ? no clues in media info though.

They may be a Panasonic format, was the camera Panasonic?

If you don't know the difference between Azimuth and Asimov, then either your tapes sound bad and your Robot is very dangerous. Kill all humans...... Or your tape deck won't harm a human, and your Robot's tracking and stereo imagining is spot on.

Is your Robot three laws safe?

No idea but I suspect they are edits not raw clips. I open Panasonic P2 MXF anyway.

If they are edits and you can't reliably read the media info, it could be a number of things inside the MXF container. If you upload the shortest one I can test it to see if it is an Avid format.

            Hi David.

Will check back later for link, I'm quite sure others will look as well.

What version of Edius are you running, and is it Edius you need to see these files in?

            Cheers,
            Dave.

Dave, I just loaded the file into my 7.42 and it opens and plays fine.
                MXF screenshot.jpg
It is a DNxHD based MXF.
                MXF AVID.png
I would download an Avid codec pack and see if that gets you up and running.

AVID in MXF will work with the AVID plugin only.
The AVID QT codec pack covers QuickTime container only.
He can try to rewrap the MXF files by Video Container Changer to MOV!
But this will loose 10 bit precision in Edius timline due to Edius internal limitations on QT API!

My answer was related to the recommended codec pack.
I also have the AVID option here. Very helpfully & valuable!

If you are regularly working with those types of files, it is indispensable.

In this instance the clip was only 8 Bit anyway. So if a re-wrap can be done, it should be fine. Unless QT does its usual and screws up the luma levels.
