I've uploaded two more screenshots with audio showing in the meters. I created a new project with the color bars, but still no audio, with or without the HDMI plugged in.

In addition, when I go to System settings - Preview Device, when I click on the 'settings' button I get the message 'Device doesn't support the current format - Unable to update settings"

I checked out the link to the page Hans suggested... I then downloaded the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and ran it, reopened Edius, and now I have audio. Whatever the DirectX thing did, it solved the problem... thanks again for all the help on this forum.

also, you may want to fix your project setting, you have it set to 8 channel audio (makes no sense), set it to 2 channel stereo, unless you are planning to make 7.1 surround sound

When you installed Edius did you see the DirectX tickbox? If you didn't check the tickbox that would more than likely be why the Directx download fixed your issue.

the EDIUS installer should tick that automatically if it detects that directx is missing, just like it does when Quicktime is missing, so I would call this an EDIUS bug
